Super Soo, a few people have asked this, if you do a search in the metal mouth forum you should find a few threads referring to it. I think it's to do with putting pressure on different sections of the bracket to pull the tooth in a certain direction. Sometimes orthos only put the ligs on 3 of the 4 corners of a bracket, or the two opposite corners, etc. I have figure of 8 style ligs on a few brackets where the teeth are shorter than the others so need to be pulled down. Funny thing is that I never noticed the upper and lower teeth on one side of my mouth are all shorter (in varying degrees) than on the other side! How weird is that?
I had 3 of those little figure eights on my rotated teeth. The assitant explained to me that mine were to place more pressure on the wire to help unrotate those particular teeth faster. I now have one wire tie on a very stubborn tooth. Hope this helps.
