You're right drrick. I am probably going for the dentist that was recommended by my ortho and is near my home. I spoke to the office manager and she explained that a lot of the time the deep cleaning is done due to legal reasons or to keep them from happening...just like med drs....dentists have malpractice suits as well. I probably do have bone loss but I was diagnosed with bone loss 15+ years ago and went through with the 4 sections. You could have peeled me off the ceiling. I'd go through natural childbirth (without meds - which I did twice, if I might add) than to go through that again!

Sounds like I'm in for it in the future. I just want a basic cleaning now and will look into deep cleaning when the braces are removed. AND how do I know if my bone loss has changed over the last 15+ years? My previous dentist didn't say a word about it in the 12 years I saw him - all I heard was that I have a tendency to have plague buildup and need to be sure to get my cleanings done regularly.

Now that you said you had bone loss I am even less surprised by the fact that some perio tx was discussed.

Pocket depth/attachment loss etc are a couple of big SPAMMERS LIKE ME in periodontal diagnosis and you already have attachment loss.

Plus you are obviously prone to perio disease considering you had it so young (35) That is a big risk factor as well.

having second thoughts

wish I had known more of this before I got braces. I am due to get 3 TADs at the end of the month and am concerned that I 'll have enough bone for them to be inserted. The oral surgeon didn't seem to think there'd be a problem. I'll keep you posted. The whole reason I got braces was to close the gaps where molars once were. Hoping that will be able to happen with the TADs
