They are for correcting overbites, underbites and mismatched midlines, and to close tiny gaps in the bite.

Overbite: Top either canine or bicuspid to lower back molars. To pull the top teeth back.
Underbite: Top back molars to lower Canines or Bicuspids. To pull the lower teeth back.
Midline: Usually diagonal line from the top left to the bottom right canine or vice versa depending on what side the midline is shifted off.
Tiny gaps in the bite: Are made in triangle form to close the spces you see when the person bites down in their bites.

DISCLAIMER! Your orthodontist will tell you how he or she wants you to secficially place these please do not follow my regiment. I simply just stated the most common placements.
