I've had in-ovation C for over a year, zero staining, and I am a smoker and tea drinker.
have you consider finding a third or even a fourth ortho, because you seem so unsure about the two of them that you have now, that it doesn't sound promising...Just sugesting.

Good luck choosing orthos. I think you just have to pick somebody you're comfortable with. Keep in mind what are your goals while you're in braces, and make sure they align with what the ortho is able to offer to you. Don't forget things like communication skills and things like that, they are very important, and also accessibility in case you have questions in between visits, or how long it takes to make emergency appointments.
As for braces... I personally have ceramic however I would have been totally fine w/metal. As somebody else said, people are going ot notice your braces no matter what kind you have. If you can save money on metal, and you are okay knowing people may notice a little bit more, than get the metal. Also, keep in mind that metal is smaller than ceramic. My ligs stain all the time w/my ceramic so as somebody said, it won't really matter, people will notice them! But, some people are strong affinities for one or the other, so in the end it's really what you think you'd be more comfortable with.

Good luck chosing your Ortho. As for ceramic vs. metal braces.
My experience : People will always notice your braces regardless of which kind you have. Personally, if I had done more research, I would have gotten all metal, but being the DIVA that I am, I chose ceramic on top and metal on the bottom. Ceramics are not noticable in pictures only. Besides, I have a harder time getting my lips over the ceramics braces.

The ligs that go on metal brackets are the same thing and will stain as well, but the staining is harder to see up against the metal brackets. I had clear on my front 4 teeth and the ortho used wire ties instead of ligatures so staining was not a problem for me.BracedGeek wrote:
That is what I thought. I really wanted invisalign, but beyond that, there was going to be something on my teeth. That plus my concerns about the ligs staining made me decide for metal.

This is my experience so far as well. I have ceramic top and bottom, and chose that for vanity. But if I'd really done more research, I think I would have gone with metal. My orthodontist uses "micro brackets", which have a lower profile than ceramic and are smaller. I think that would have been more comfortable, and since I have a short sentence, I think I would have dealt with metal just fine after people's initial reaction. Once they know, they know, you know?

I really like what you said there! Cheers35ksmile wrote:well i had braces as a kid (i'm 22 now, was 14 when i got them off) so the "vanity" aspect of braces has never really bothered me. in fact, i had "old school" braces when i was a kid and now i have self-ligating ones... and i think the self-lig metal ones actually look kind of awesome.
i personally don't think braces negatively impact someone's appearance at all. in fact, even before my adult braces treatment, i found braces to be attractive in a strange way - they give someone character. it's almost like a status symbol - beautiful smiles are attractive, if you have braces you essentially already have a beautiful smile (i mean, it's definitely coming, so) and you obviously have the combination of expense, vanity (isn't always a bad thing) and still an element of humility (you're willing to put up with train tracks in your mouth to achieve what you want - good on you!).
i actually have way more respect for people with metal braces than either clear or invisalign for the reasons listed above - plus i've been there before, and i'm there again, so there's that! the fact is, anybody who's actually had braces before will not care (and probably be supportive) no matter what you choose. it's been my experience that people with less-than-perfect teeth and/or those who have never had braces that tend to be the most judgmental, who can blame them?

Re: Think I made a Mistake...
First of all, go with the ortho you have the most confidence in. The first ortho I went to would have been partially covered by my dental insurance but he wanted to pull a front bottom tooth which I did not want to do. the second ortho was much more expensive but she straightened my teeth without extracting my front bottom tooth and my teeth look great.
Second of all, regardless of clear v. metal, the best defense is a good offense. I immediately pointed out to everyone I knew that I got braces, which saved me from those embarassing stares. I laughed along with my friends when food fell out of my mouth the first few weeks because I couldn't chew, I pointed out my own sybillant "s", and I still swish with water at the table after lunch in full view of my friends. Really, no one cares about your braces but you (and fellow brace buddies!).
