Trying to get pregnant - with braces

#1 Post by angelina »

My husband and I are trying for a baby and I'm on the home stretch with my braces so I'm told - so I'm hoping they'll be off within 6 months or hopefully before!

Will I have to disclose this to the orthodontist in case I'm ever unknowingly pregnant and they do something that shouldn't be done while pregnant? Obviously I'll avoid xrays but who knows what they put in my mouth each appointment lol.

I considered delaying trying to get pregnant however my husband and my age + my fertility issues are not on our side and it would be best if I did fall sooner rather than later.

Congratulations on that journey you and your husband have chosen. I personally don't think anything related to Orrhodontics can affect a pregnancy or the baby, with the exception of xrays of course like you mentioned. Right after the braces are removed is when they will take a full panoramic xray. For peace of mind you could always mention that you will not be doing those xrays considering the circumstances and then your ortho will know of your plans.

Update: I'm now 6 weeks pregnant. That was quick!

I haven't told the ortho yet because I haven't been in for a wire change but will at my next appointment. I did have a hygiene appointment and she recommended no xrays and skipped fluoride treatment as an err on the side of caution. So I'll stick with that.

I didn't really consider diet limitations and morning sickness. It's proving harder than I thought. There's only a few things you need to limit while pregnant, and a few with braces, but unfortunately they don't really cross over so it isn't easy.

I've considered the idea of requesting them off early but I suspect I've only got a few months to go (hoping - I know my next appointment is my last wire change). I might mention that I'm struggling next time I go in for an appointment and see what they say.

Another thing I hadn't considered: pregnancy gingivitis. I was lucky to escape this with my first pregnancy but the hygienist mentioned I already have a small amount of inflammation. There's nothing I can do to stop/prevent it as it's to do with hormones, so yeah another thing that's not a good combination of pregnancy + braces.

Can't wait until they're off :FeelSick:

Congratulations! Did you check out this posting? http://www.archwired.com/Pregnancy1.htm

Since pregnancy impacts your hormones and may affect your pain threshold you might want to consider mentioning it to your ortho.
2-year sentence of clear top and bottom braces commencing March 23, 2016
November 2016 - Class III elastics (starts from the bottom canine and goes to the upper 1st molar) on both sides
December 2016 - Two front teeth filed (IPR?) to make space to close black triangle and a power chain; 4 front bottom ceramic brackets replaced with metal brackets to force the teeth straighter; 1 broken bottom molar bracket (courtesy of a Tootsie Roll craving);

I hadn't seen that posting yet - that's a great read! Thank you! I completely understand her and all of the extra appointments :crazy:

Yikes, hopefully given that it's my last wire it won't be too much more trauma. Though I would imagine with my last one I'll need a powerchain. I'll definitely mention it to them and see what they suggest :)
