Severe pain after extraction of 4 teeth

#1 Post by Samahir »

I had my 4 1st premolars extracted 3 days ago and my braces tightened and since the local anaesthetic wore off I have been in so much pain whenever I stop taking my pain medications. I am very worried about developing some sort of stomach ulcer or something if I continue to pop pills like this. For how long am I supposed to keep experiencing this much pain?

All your 4 premolars had been extracted in one appointment? Your braces had been tightened just after the extractions?
I can't answer you precisely because I had my braces one month after the extractions.
Stop taking too much pills I agree, maybe your pain will last one week.

Yes that's what they did. Right now and so much pain later, I really think that it wasn't very wise of them lol. I try to stretch the time between doses, but the pain is on the clock. If this doesn't go away by 1 week, I'll really be in big trouble!

I wouldn't worry about stomach ulcers... those develop after months to years of use, not a couple weeks.

Yes stomach ulcers will developp after years of use yes, but your body will rapidly be accustomed to pills so they won't be as efficient as now.

I find that's strange that you were braced the day after the extractions. Normally the orthodontist recommands to wait around one week or more...
If the pain don't start diminishing after one week, go to your dentist.

I was told to use another type of pain medications that are less associated with ulcers.
I am worried because I take large doses quite frequently. I must take the next dose within less than 8 hours or else the pain breaks through something bad.
If this persists I'll definitely go back to my ortho.

Ok! Hope your pain will disappear soon! The first week was very painful for me when I had my braces but after one week all was ok!

I am looking forward to this. But I am also telling myself that since pain is all over my mouth it must also mean that my teeth are trying to move :D

I'm not sure who told you to avoid the "ulcer" drug, but if you are taking ibuprofen, which has the reputation for ulcers with long-term use or misuse, you can take it with food and follow label directions with confidence. Ibuprofen specifically targets biochemical intermediaries associated with dental (and orthopedic) pain. The more significant adverse effect is on the kidneys, which is not well publicized, but again, in normal doses according to directions on the label you will be fine. (Disclosure I am an RN). Best of luck to you.

I will add that the propensity for ulcers will be reduced if you make sure to always take NSAIDs such as Ibuprofen or Naprosin with plenty of food. You don't really need to be worried about ulcers for short-term NSAID use unless you already have them, are prone to them, or continually take the NSAIDS on an empty stomach.

just make sure to eat when taking the pain reliever meds.

2+ months after having braced,I have been extracted 2 upper bicuspids and they hurt a lot for the first 3 days! but the pain diminishes everyday. Today is my fourth day of getting my tooth extracted and there's little to now pain except when eating. :(

Thank you for the clarification Dan! It is diclofenac that I am taking. I take 50 mg every 8 hours because that's when the pain usually comes back. I was thinking that maybe my needs are excessive and that's what got me worried.

Thank you admin!

I will make sure that I take my meds with meals. I do sometimes take them on an empty stomach. Thankfully I haven't had any ulcer problems before.

You are lucky! It's been 7 days now for me. Today is the first day I could manage to take the drug after 10 hours instead of the usual 7-8 hours but I ended up taking it anyway. Still I recognize this as progress. Thankfully eating doesn't make things worse for me!

Hopefully you are feeling better by now! If not, I would definitely ask my ortho/dentist. I had 4 extractions and then had my first adjustment appointment immediately afterwards, and I didn't find the discomfort to be that bad. I took the recommended dose of ibuprofen before leaving the office, and then once before I went to sleep that night and I was fine. NOTHING like my first week in braces!
