Regarding gums and gumshaping...

#1 Post by lovelydoll »

Hi!! It's my first time in the forums =) Anyway, I don't know if you guys have had the same experience, but I've had my braces on for a year. Before putting on my braces, I had a bit of an overbite, but no gum problems. My top teeth stuck out.. but my smile was fine. Since then, I have had 4 extractions, 2 on the bottom and 2 on top. After putting on braces for a year, my profile has indeed become more flatter, but as I look in the mirror more, I see that my gums are HUMUnGOUS!!! I can see more gums than teeth. It looks very unnatural.

I was wondernig if there is anything i can do about my top gums? I feel like a donkey when I smile because I'm exposing so much red gums!! I hope another year in braces won't give me a toothless grin!! Can someone help me? Can I do gum shaping surgeries or something to correct it? Thanks in advance!

I had gingivectomy done just before the braces to remove some extra gum from the front bottom teeth. My teeth looked much better then :)

But I think you should wait until the treatment is over. After that, if you still have lots of gum covering your teeth, periodontist knows the right treatment to trim the gum tissues to look the teeth more attractive. That's what my periodontist said during my last appointment.

My gums are like that too. I had a huge overjet (14mm) pre-braces, so that gum has to go somewhere, and unfortunately for you and me, it decides to slide right down our teeth. I am getting a gum lift after my braces are off. My orthodontist told me that I have to wait at least a month for the gum tissue to shrink up a little after the braces are off, and then they will know how much to trim. I will be getting mine done by a periodontist too.
