I am looking at having to have 6 veneers put on my top teeth 3 months after my the braces come off . I asked my dentist about bonding and he told them with the boneloss that has occured and receeding gum line that bonding would look like crap ( his words to be exact). I trust this dentist and he doesn't beat around the bush but says it just as he sees it.
Here is my question. Does anyone here have veneers or know someone who does. Anyone thinking of getting them? If you or a friend got veneers are you happy with them? Any insite would be greatly appreciated.
Braces should be coming off before the end of this year.
Jennifer
Veneers aren't just for making crooked teeth look straight. Sometimes people, like me, have chips and worn down teeth that make them not look very nice. After spending thousands on braces you want your teeth to look as perfect as possible, kinda hard with chips and worn down teeth. Veneers are a way to achieve the look you want. I can't afford veneers but my dentist is very skilled at doing a composite build up on teeth. I will be having that done after my braces.

Nikkie, I completely agree!!! My challenge is "stained" looking front teeth because my mother took tetracycline when she was pregnant with me. Years of grinding hasn't helped the snaggle tooth look either!
My dentist refused to do veneers on my top front teeth until I had the bite corrected with braces (said my grinding and off-bite would ruin the veneers and I'd just end up mad at him and unhappy with my teeth). If the Zoom whitening treatment I have after the braces come off doesn't achieve the bright, white look I want, I'll get the veneers. I'm 45 and sick and tired of dull teeth that look stained. I have to admit that the braces and having everything straightened out has already improved the look of things.
I say, if you're not happy with your look, go for the veneers, bonding or whatever else improves your smile. That's why we're in braces too, right? (yeah, yeah, yeah, for the correct BITE too!!! )

Yeah, I might have to join the veneer-club after my braces come off too!
Chipped, stained, decayed, eroded. They may well turn out to be 100% straight after the braces, but mine are gonna look gross! I think it's going to cost a lot of money though.
If you're unhappy about your teeth, go for it! I think we deserve "perfect" teeth after years of orthodontic treatment!
Yes my teeth are straight but way to many gaps that won't close due to boneloss. The braces have helped but the veeners will complete the look. This is what happens sometimes to people in their later years. I'm ( 46). My dentist quoted the price of $ 3700 for having 6 veeners on top. So I figured by the time I am done my teeth would of cost me a whoppin $8,200. OUCH! What can I say. When I first talked to the orthodontist about braces he never mentioned that I may be looking at veeners after the braces come off. He also said that the braces would be off after 16 months. That would of been last July and I do believe I have a few months left to go. When I asked him when does he think they will come off he said sometime before the end of the year. I should of asked him what year! LOL I am happy to know that I am not alone in this battle for a nice smile. Granted it will be so worth it when for the first time I can smile and feel confident . Of course this will take some practice for I have always hid my smile. Thanks again all. And good luck to everyone out there.
I will be joining the Veneer club too. Once my teeth are straight, I will need veneers to fix a peg lateral on one side and to reshape a canine to look like my genetically missing lateral on the other side. After spending the $$ and time in braces, I want to end up with a smile I am ultimately happy with. I may not be able to afford food, but heck - I'll have a good smile.

Braces on March 15, 2005
Estimated treatment time: 18-24 months. Official debanding date - June 14, 2007 - Total of 27 months!
Even before treatment starts, both my ortho and periodontist have warned me I'm going to need veneers or bonding to finish closing all the spaces, as apparently my teeth are a little smaller than normal.
After all this, I think i'm going to win the prize for the most expensive teeth. $8000 for braces, $5000-7000 for surgery, plus the cost of 2 crowns, whitening and veneers. Thanks goodness this whole process is so lengthy, or i'd never be able to pay it off!
Waiting for life to settle down a bit before committing to 3 years of braces, lower jaw surgery, crowns and some whitening.
I'm dying to get veneers! But my dentist said that he can "shape" my teeth when the braces come off. Does anyone know what that means? I'm assuming that will be covered in the cost of my braces. I guess if I'm not happy with what the "shaping" looks like then I can just get veneers... if I can afford it after all this!!!
By shaping your ortho probably means filing or grinding them into shape, my orthos been doing this as we've gone along.
My top teethwe're pretty much in alignment, but still looked slightly crooked because of chips and one was more worn than the other, so he used a small circular grinding disc to reshape them, only took a few minutes and now they look fab.
Lilsisbet, I too may not be able to afford food when everything is done. What a great new diet. Ha Ha........ I too will have a great smile and lose some weight in the process.......
Research veneers and your cosmetic dentist before going through with it. I know three people who have gotten the upper six veneers and all three went to different doctors and none of them have been happy. First, they are expensive and all three of these women were not aware that veneers don't last forever. It is a permanent decision, once made, but the actual veneers can crack, pop off the tooth and do require maintenance.
One friend is actually the wife of a dentist and she is a dental hygenist. (Her husband didn't do the veneers). She had braces put on to make some spaces between her teeth so her smaller than normal sized upper front teeth could have veneers done. After the braces came off, she went in to have the veneers done. The cosmetic dentist began to prep an upper tooth and realized quickly that after taking the top surface off, her teeth would actually not be thick enough or big enough to hold the veneer. So they had to crown all the uppers. She cried for a week straight. Eventually, she accepted it but still sincerely regretted the whole process.
My two other friends both got veneers and they both have had the veneers pop off once in a while. One also grinds her teeth and has fractured two veneers. For some reason, Jennifer's veneers are starting to turn her tooth behind it darker and now the once white veneers look kind of brownish. (I wonder if there could be decay under there?)
In all, my three friends have found the veneers to look great at the start but have ended up being unhappy in that they didn't realize how what a long term expense it would be to maintain the veneers. I know that my one friend told me that she was so mad that her dentist only told her after she had done the veneers, that she would have to expect for them to have to be replaced every 8 or 10 years. At that point, her choice was irreversible and a long term commitment, which she didn't expect. I think she thought they were permanent and once was forever. Just like fillings or crowns, nothing is forever.
Ask lots of questions and think over carefully if they are the right choice for you.

That's a pretty good price. My dentist quoted $1000 per tooth, and that's about average around here.
I went with bonding on the four front teeth (to fix wearing/chipping) and it looks great... perhaps I was just lucky enough to find someone who's good at bonding. I decided against veneers partly because of the cost but also because they'd have to grind away most of my tooth. It's definitely an irreversible process and I just wasn't keen on losing so much tooth - especially after paying so much to get the little monsters straight!
I have had veneers for many years and have never had any problems. I had TMJ surgery years ago on both sides. Now things went crazy and I have deterating jaw bones and my bite is out of whack. Basically the whole process is starting all over again, minus the TMJ surgery.
I have three on my team. So far I have had 10 root canals, anchors put into the bones, extractions, and now in braces. The root canals were strictly for stablizing the teeth for the braces. My total cost of all my work is estimated at $100,000.00. Very costly after going through the TMJ surgeries and believing that past dentist were doing the right thing...to find out that they did the bare minimum and not keeping things together as much as they could have.
I am going to get all of my veneers replaces at the end of all of this. I have had such wonder results from them in the past. I think everything depends on the expertise of the professionals. It's a long road and a lot of money...and I had the perfect smile already from past work....now it's starting all over again. I'm on a two year road and got my braces the 15th of August. So far no problems.
It's all what you make of it. Things could be a whole lot worse and there are many others that are in a lot worse problems than I. It's very hard to complain about anything going down this road. There is a pot of gold at the end I'm sure. It's nice to be thankful that there are ways and means to fix it!
