Open bite question

#1 Post by dejavu »

So I've been thinking about my open bite recently. It's my main issue with my teeth and the biggest reason I have braces, to fix the open bite, but I'm a bit confused about the things I read online about them. From what I've read, open bites are caused by thumb sucking or tongue thrusting, and I'm pretty sure those have never been an issue for me. I did not suck my thumb even in infancy, but I think I had an open bite even when I had baby teeth. I don't ever remember a time when my teeth overlapped the way they ought to. Up until I got braces, I just didn't realize that they were supposed to be any different.

Tongue thrusting I'm a little less certain about. I think it means when you rest your tongue between your top and bottom teeth? If so, I have never done that. My default tongue resting position is sort of behind my top front teeth. So, I don't think that's the cause either?

The main reason I'm curious is that I read online that open bites tend to come back after treatment. My orthodontist hasn't expressed any concerns about that to me, but still, it seems to be a common thing. I'm just wondering if open bites develop for any other reasons aside from the tongue thrusting or thumb sucking thing, and also how common it is for them to return after braces? Anybody have experience with this?

Since you are resting your tongue behind your teeth that could your open bite. That's not the proper resting position.

I'm not sure I'm understanding? My tongue doesn't even really touch my teeth, it's just sort of behind them, so I don't know how it could be effecting what they do. Where are you supposed to place your tongue at rest?

Perhaps your tongue is placing constant pressure on the roots of your upper teeth?

Open bite seems to be a mysterious thing with no guarantee any which way, there seems to be a certain amount of cases that relapse at least a little, then there are cases that correction of open bite seems to also correct improper resting position of the tongue, and certainly there are some cases with no relapse at all

I'm also not 100% sure how I came to have an open bite, when I was first hearing that I needed braces at 13, I had an overbite with my two top front teeth and they overlapped a little

Then I lost one of my top front teeth and at some point lost a premolar(on the bottom) then years later I lost my top left 1st molar, so I think I my case there was enough room for teeth to move, which probably help to create my anterior open bite, also possible tongue position played a part

In your case, who knows, maybe also a combination of things?
Lots of crimes here

1. The upper molars bite too far ahead of the lower molars

2. Missing teeth #s 9, 14, and, 29

3. Open bite

4. Upper midline left of center

5. Lower midline right of center

6. Upper and lower teeth not straight

Sentence - 24 months, turned to 27 month.

Braces removed since 11/06/17
