I've actually thought about making an extra appointment every year (beyond my 2 that are paid for). Just to make sure thinking wicked happens in my mouth.

I know my dentist would be happy I was in braces in the first place.

I agree you should find a different dentist. Maybe your ortho can recommend one!

I would cry kick scream and beg if I couldnt get my teeth cleaned more often than every 2-3 months while in braces. FORGET ALL THAT NONSENSE!

I even go to multiple places just to make it work. Heck in october I went to a dental school and paid $15 for a cleaning. What a deal!

Anyway you should always be covered for your regular 6 month prophy. And anything in addition you will have to pay unless in extreme cases where it is mandatory long term frequent cleaning from other issues aside from ortho. You should have no issue in finding a place that will clean your teeth for $90 after discount, or a dental school around $35. So go to your pro as usual, ans supplement with the cheapies.
