wisdom teeth removal before braces?
Has anyone had their wisdom teeth removed before getting braces? I'm getting all four of mine (all impacted) out soon with only local and I'm a bit nervous.. Any tips for the recovery, what to eat, etc.?

Your oral surgeon will be giving you all that information; it's going to be specific to your particular surgery.

When I had my consultation with the surgeon, I mentioned that I would be getting braces as well. He asked me to postpone getting the braces on until after the wisdom teeth removal because of the way they were positioned. Also, I have a small mouth and he needed every bit of space as he was removing all four wisdom teeth at once. Good luck!

I got two molars removed and had my braces fitted 3 days later, make sure you clean the sockets after every meal for a month otherwise they can get irritated. Mash potatoes were my best friend during the 3 days of recovery!

My orthodontist said is optional but suggested.

Recovery is fairly straight-forward -- avoid tobacco and alcohol, vigorous swishing or anything that would dislodge the clots; follow directions for gentle oral hygiene; take your pain meds and don't suffer! I had mine extracted many years ago with only a local and it was fine. They had a hard time with one of them but I didn't feel anything so I just thought about something else. Maintain a good intake of fluids to stay hydrated. You'll probably want to have a soft diet for a few days, so smoothies may not be a bad idea. But as mentioned, you will be given complete post-op instructions. Ideally they would give them to you before the day of the procedure (perhaps the practice's website has them posted). Best of luck to you!
