Need advise regarding poking wire

#1 Post by BrianWong »

Hi there, I am new to this forum and I have had braces for the past 6 months now; I due to have the surgery to correct my jaw. I had poking wire at the back of my teeth before but I don't think it was this bad. I for one hate the putting wax on, it falls out and it is difficult to put on. This time around just like usual the wire at the end keep poking my skin, this have been happening for a couple of weeks now. However today When I look in the mirror and check the skin at the end of the braces it looks like overgrown skin it is white and when I touch it is hard and uneven; It is not painful when I touch it but is it normal to have this kind of things happening? Will it heal or will I have it permanently? I would post a picture of it but I have no idea how to.

That is normal, especially when wire is poking the same spot. I have callused areas in my mouth as well.

Ah, thanks makes me feel much better now. I wish there is something like a cap to put on the wire preventing it cutting the skin.

Mmm I had a similar problem- when my teeth were moving lots the wire would poke out the back and stab me in the cheek. Very uncomfortable and distracting.
In the end I took some nail clippers to it and that resolved the problem... Ortho didn't mind either- said they would have done the same.
Also found the wax is useless! I used Hubba bubba chewing gum instead- so thick in consistency you can stick it over sharp bits-again ortho said that's fine- just make sure you brush lots!
Pokey wires are easily sorted. Speak with your ortho- they can anneal the ends so it's more comfortable. Don't suffer... We have enough to deal with, without poking wires.
Good luck on your journey :-)

Another recommendation for the nail clippers here too!

It drove me to distraction one day so i stormed in the bathroom and attacked it with the clippers - instant relief! :D

I got a steel tie today and it's already poking me! The hygienist just said to use a pencil eraser and try to poke it back under the wire...I guess it's worth a shot...

may sound weird but a bit of pencil eraser might work.if not the best way to get the wax to stick is completely dry it off back there and use a big gob of the wax around both the back bracket and wire thats sticking out all in one, the bracket will help the wax stay put.hope this helps!
