The Dark (Fun) Side of Diastema

#1 Post by djspeece »

I confess that many of the terms used on this forum are new to me, such as diastema. Out of curiosity I went to wikipedia for a quick definition, and was mildly surprised to read "As early as this time period, the gap between the front teeth, especially in women, had been associated with lustful characteristics. Thus, the implication in describing "the gap-toothed wife of Bath" is that she is a middle-aged woman with insatiable lust. This has no scientific basis, but it has been a popular assumption in folklore since the Middle Ages."

Inquiring minds need to know: is this true? :D

LOL, who knows!

"They" equate the size of a man's nose/feet/fingers with...um....the size of another part of his anatomy. How true is that one?

I think it's pretty funny. I've never heard about a reference to gapped front teeth and lust. That's a new one on me!!!
I'm the owner/admin of this site. Had ceramic uppers, metal lowers ~3 years in my early 40's. Now in Hawley retainers at night!

LOL, I had one as a child but my ortho had closed it by the time I was 10-11. I wonder what that means? I used to put gummy bears between my teeth. I thought it was cute; my ortho, dentist and parents didn't agree.

Oh, I had to explain what references to the size of a man's nose can mean in western cultures to my dentist and a nurse. They were mortified.

The nose and ears continue to grow and enlarge as a man ages. Is this something I can look forward too in my golden years?

Oh yes. Plus the extra hair (nostrils, ear canals) and becoming interested in devices that can clip it (rotary clipping vs back-and-forth motion).

Well, my mother thought that I should become a pianist based on my fingers, I wear size 11 shoes, and I do have a non-petite nose. So, this is quite true. (I wish, ha-ha :gavel: )

It is true where I am from. The Caribbean.

If you read my adjustment post, you will see how sad i was that my ortho said i had to completely close my diastema else it would reopen and could possible get larger after braces.

I admit mine was larger than average...But if i could have gotten braces to fix my teeth and leave the gap (smaller) i would have opted for it.

And if my teeth were straight save for the gap. I would not have gotten braces.
Besides its kinda of a family trait, my mom and most of her siblings have it, and i have had it my entire life. even my baby teeth i had a diastema.
It was weird watching myself and not seeing it. Words felt different in my mouth....sigh it was a HUGE readjustment on my part.

There is something considered "sexy" in my culture about a diastema. I know people who describe the perfect person as having a gap, or who say things like "You know i cant resist a woman with a gap like that"

As wikipedia said...something to do with lust.

I mean i speak from experience here. There was not a week that on my way to work/skool, that i wouldnt get a comment from a stranger pertaining to my gap.
Something along the lines of "Wow girl....i love ur smile" or " I love girls with a space like urs" or even
"Is it true what they say about women with a space like urs?" Apparently women with a gap is thought to be adventurous in bed. (Prob the whole lust thing exaggerated)

But yeah, you get the idea?

Hope that answers ur curiosity.

I've heard reference to overjets in similar fashion: A woman with an overbite (actually, overjet) can give a good bl.... er.... uhm...

yes, they say so... i don't kno why they asociate diastema with lust. i heard it thousands of times. but my diastema actually look bad, i hope braces will close all the gaps there.
