Hi,
I'm a 40 yr old woman in braces for the first time. I am missing my adult upper canine teeth and still have the baby teeth there. I have open coil springs on both sides over the baby teeth to create more space for eventual implants or bridgework.
Here's my question. One of the coils slides slightly back and forth on the wire. Just a fraction of an inch but I can move it. It is on the wire but not secured to either tooth. The other coil does not move at all, seems secured to the teeth on either end. I called my orthodontist to ask and got the over bubbly hygienist who assured me this was totally fine and that coil was maybe shorter, but I'm not sure she knew what she was talking about. I don't want to waste time and go back in June to find out that it should have been secure all along. Also feel bad about doubting the chirpy chick. Maybe she does know her stuff.
I'm pretty much resolved to go in on Monday and show them and ask again, but was wondering: have any of you had open coil springs? Is this normal? (Being able to move spring)
Thank you!

Re: Open coil question
I have the same thing as I have no brackets from my first premolar to the bracket on my last molar- the coil is there but it slides back and forth just a bit. I have been told that it will maintain space should my teeth move that much- (not by ortho mind you) I have an adjustment on wed the 8th so I will find out then what the deal is- the day I go my braces on I was in such a state of shock that I had actually done it that I couldn't even begin to think of any questions. Now I have a list
Will be posting about it after adjustment on my story in Braces stories after appointment.
