Anyone had a wisdom tooth removed while braced?
Hello,
I need to have one wisdom tooth removed, it is fully erupted and I was wondering what I should expect. I have had teeth extracted before but not a wisdom tooth. Is the experience similiar?
I was thinking about doing it on Friday, but that is the day my sister is having her baby and I expect I will be going back and forth to the hospital all weekend long. Plus, on Saturday, I had an event I wanted to attend... should I hold off for another weekend?
Thanks for any replies!

I've not had mine out (I don't think I grew any) but I wouldn't arrange to have them removed on a weekend when you have other plans. Most people get some swelling and it will hurt a bit. It's more major than a regular tooth extraction.
There is another girl on this board who had hers out not long ago (I've forgotten her username right this moment) and video blogged it on youtube, while she had braces. I'll see if I can find it for you (or perhaps she'll read this and be able to give you more info).

I think a lot depends on your tooth; certainly a fully erupted one will be easier to pull than an impacted one.
However, they are pretty big chunks of bone, and buried waaaayyy back there. You are going to be up the proverbial creek if you need pain meds and can't take them due to having to run around town.

Oooh, yes I agree. Don't do it the same week (at least a week) that you have other plans that need you up and about. Especially in case you don't bounce back as well as you thought you might.
I had one molar removed in the chair by a dentist and was awake for it before I got braces and I was out for a few days with the general blergh feeling and swelling. Plus it is a bit difficult to eat so you have less energy than you otherwise would. That all went smoothly and used nothing but OTC meds and antibiotics.
Then having had 3 wisdoms (all erupted) out after braces last year (mind you, I also had 4 TAD's inserted as well) and that was in hospital with the whole shebang... I was knocked off my feet a good 2 weeks. It didn't go as smoothly as the first go, but it was still good. Again, only OTC meds and antibiotics but I was counting down the minutes that I could take the pain meds again for the 3rd & 4th days.
If anyone tells you getting a tooth out is no big deal, imagine how much sympathy you'd get if you had a hole in your arm with bone exposed and stitches to fix it. That is in your mouth.
It's a survivable thing, but man... you really feel like poopie afterwards.

Thank you everyone!
I will definitely put it off a week, luckily, I have two 3 day weekends in a row.

I'd put it off for a week if I were you. If you know you're going to be busy, it's better to wait. You want to spend the weekend or few days after the surgery resting. You'll be in pain and there will be swelling in the back of your jaw for a couple of days.

Thanks again everyone!
I scheduled it for next weekend, another 3 day weekend and nothing planned so far. Lucky me.

I'm almost afraid to ask, pellepee, but how was getting the TADs? I'm supposed to get one.

isthistaken, it is absolutely nothing to be worried about at all! I forget they are there along with the braces until I need to clean them.
I was actually the last patient of the day so my surgeon didn't come to visit me to tell me that while I had to not clean near the wisdom teeth holes (to avoid dislodging the blood clot and getting dry socket as a result) that I did have to take care of the TAD sites with antiseptic mouth wash (which were near the holes!). So they got a little tender more than they should have. I ended up getting a super-super-super-super soft toothbrush in the mail from him and was told to dip it in antiseptic mouthwash and gently brush each TAD at night until they come out which I believe is what he was supposed to tell me in the hospital and didn't. It keeps everything clean now, so my problems initially were from a lack of instruction.
The only time I notice they are there is when they get loaded up with a new elastic, you feel a very slight pressure in your jaw bone but the tooth pain overrides that very quickly.

Thanks, pellepee. You are brave to have four of them!
