No brackets on the back?

#1 Post by rhibee83 »

Hi Guys

I dont have my braces yet, but my orthodontist said that I am not having brackets on my very back molars (not wisdom teeth, the molars just before wisdom teeth).

I am in preparation for a nance button and upper lingual arch where they put the molar bands on and attach everything next week. The molar bands are NOT going on my very back molars, rather the molars before my back molars (lol sorry I am not good with names of teeth yet!) My very back molars (the ones the molar band IS NOT being attached too) are not straight and do not point downwards like normal they point out towards the cheeks. Now, if they are not putting brackets on those teeth, how are they all meant to get straight?

does anyone else not have brackets on there back molars and what is going on with them? are they just hanging in the breeze? lol

thanks for your help in advance :)

p.s these are my top teeth I am talking about :)

They often don't put brackets on those teeth because they usually just follow the others and move where the are supposed to. It's not that way for everyone, but that is the reason why I didn't get them on mine originally. As the gaps closed those ones would move where they should be.

However they ended up putting brackets on those molars on the bottom a few months into my treatment. I was having a lot of pain and those teeth had gotten very loose and clicky. When my ortho looked he said "someones been doing their own orthodontics!". Apparently with the changes to the top teeth the pressure caused when I bit down was all going onto the lower ones and moving them.... in the wrong direction! So those teeth were bracketed then and wired and now have delightful springs on them to help move them in the right direction. The top ones behaved themselves and moved as they should. :-)

I got brackets on my molars 3 months into treatment. If you don't need them, then you are lucky! I find it so hard to clean between my 1st and 2nd molar.

I also don't have brackets on my back molars at the bottom and wondered what was going to happen here? As I'm only 3 months into treatment I assumed that they will be added at a later date. I must ask my orthodontist at the next appointment.

oh ok, its just that my molar band is going around the molar BEFORE my back molars, i think the premolar, and i was wondering how the very back molar would move if the molar band is on the one before it. I am having teeth out so that my teeth can move backward (I have an overbite) and the lingual arch is goign to be there to stop my molars from moving into the gaps. I just feel that the back top molar is going to be just hanging there with nothing on it, when all of its mates infront have stuff going on. I dont know how it will move with all the gadgets. lol

I guess I will find out next time I go to the orthodontist, i will ask him WHY lol I tend to just go "oh ok" to his comments and then get home and go "ummm why did he say that?" lol im a dag!

thank you for your input :) :)

I'm no help as to why but my daughter doesn't have her back molars bracketed and I don't think they're planning to at this stage. They're due to come off in 5 or 6 months and there's been no mention of putting any on there.

its weird isnt it? I dont know how they can move without assistance as my top back molars point out towards my cheeks and do not face downward so i dont get how it will move, but I will ask next week :)

I don't have any brackets on any of my molars top or bottom. I only know that I am supposed to get them at some point because my orthodontist told me that at my second consultation. I was expecting to get them in mid-January which didn't happened. So, I was expecting to get them yesterday when I went for my second adjustment. Again, it didn't happen. I'm not too upset about it, though because I think it's going to be a bear flossing those teeth when the brackets finally do get placed and I am NOT looking forward to that.

I got brackets a few months into treatment too. The teeth have a tendancy to close gaps and straighten up anyway, I got my wisdom teeth a few weeks before braces and my teeth moved in that time, solved a lot of the pointing towards my cheeks which you mention. When I got back brackets it was more for arch widening than straightness.

Hi Dee17
I know I am kinda glad if the orthodontist says that they dont need to put brackets on the back, cos I think it would rub against my cheek alot more than what the others ones probably will anyway! maybe they will put them on me later down the track like you. i guess we will both find out eventually! :)

hi Starfish88

I guess they will straighten up by themselves as the other teeth move, I guess I will just have to wait and see :) I hope I dont get them anyway hehe as long as my teeth straighten i will be a happy girl! :)

My brackets only go back as far as my premolars.

When I was a pre teen and the dreaded braces topic came up it was mentioned back then that I probably wouldn't need them all the way back.

I have the same set up that you're about to get. The bands for my nance are around my second molars from the back with my last molar (not wisdom, they're removed) butting up against the bands.
My last molars don't seem to be affected by the bracket at all. They sit quite comfortably.
Some advice that I will give you though, is to be thorough of your flossing with the teeth next to the brackets. I wasn't vigilant with using the picksters and as a result, got gingivitis between the bracket and my premolar (the next tooth towards the front). I have seen the hygienist twice in the last 3 months and I've been told that with routine flossing, it will take a few months to correct :(
My Nance is annoying too as food gets caught in it a lot but I don't lisp any more which is great :)

Good luck! It can take a few weeks to settle into.

Hi 30withbraces :)

it is nice to know that other people have the same thing as I am getting! :) have your very back molars moved at all with the braces? mine point out towards my cheeks and to not sit straight or point downwards so I was wondering if your back ones move even though there are no brackets on them? Thank you for the advice re flossing! i find it REALLY hard to floss all the way back there without an appliance so no idea how i will go once its on (tomorrow! :yikes: ) I bought a waterpik yesterday and used it for the first time today, wow it is WEIRD and I was all awkward but I am sure i will get used to it lol. I hope your gingivitis settles down soon and your gums are feeling much better :) I am not looking forward to the food getting stuck and also the lisp!!! lol. I am worried people at work will look at me funny but oh well :(

thanks for your advice :)
