Pre-existing root resorption?

#1 Post by smilingoutloud22 »

Hi! When I first had X-rays during the consultation phase, I learned that I already had noticeable root resorption in some top and bottom teeth. I've also read that root resporption can occur during treatment with braces. My ortho said he would need to monitor/take X-rays throughout treatment to ensure further extensive resorption would not occur. He mentioned there's always a possibility treatment would need to stop if there was. Braces were my last hope for fixing my smile, so I went for it anyway, also taking into consideration that my ortho said he had worked with patients with root resorption and hadn't had to stop treatment.

As if the decision to wear metal in my mouth as an adult wasn't hard enough, learning about the root resorption and the chance that my teeth could become permanently loose or fall out is horrifying! Anyone else in the same boat? Trying to stay positive.

Hi, I am in the same boat as you!
I have short roots in four of my teeth, but due to genetics most likely. I decided to take the plunge and get braces as I just couldn't live with my crooked teeth and them making me unhappy for the rest of my life. I had my braces fitted yesterday, and know it was the right decision for me. My ortho will monitor my roots with an x ray after four months. And my treatment time it's only going to be around 9 months. Hope that helps!
