Opinions PLEASE

#1 Post by BracedSurgeryStudent »

Hey, I'm new I don't have my braces on JUST yet, but I will be VERY soon I already had all three of my orthodontic consultation appointments done. My orthodontist says I NEED Surgery that if I had JUST braces and a herbst appliance it proably wouldnt work because I am not growing and the source of my overbite is jaw discrepancy which I can see it is, she can tell it is NOT cosmetic. She gave me the names and numbers of some of the Oral Surgeons she's worked with. I went to on yesterday. He completely Contradicted here in EVERYTHING she said, but I researched her and KNOW and feel that she is WAY smarter than he is. He said he was going to bring my upper jaw dforward when she said it should be brough back becaise its the REASON for my overbite, he said it was cosmetic. Uhm, you think speech impediment(severe) is and eating problems is cosmetic? I DON'T. I really don't feel comfortable having this person be my surgeon, he was soooo rude and had HORRIBLE mannorisms. When they do Orthognathic surgery they cut it and fit it like a puzzle, puzzles arent meant to be done wrong lol. I'm just really scared. My orthodontist said to try a few people, and she gave me the name of this person who I feel soooooooooooo much better about. But I tihnk I should get a second opinion from another surgeon? Don't you?

Go for a second (or third!) opinion. The surgeon you choose is going to change the shape of your face after all-best to find an experienced and excellent one!

Thanks so much for your response, my ortho gave me the name of someone after I made this first appointment, but I researched the second person and feel really good about her. Thanks :)

Yep defintly go and find the person who will do the best outcome for your condition.

you need to be sure in your heart and head when you find the right one and dont be afraid to see 10 people until you find them.

i'm just so thankful i dont need surgery if it were me id want to be seeing finished canvases, previous customers,

i mean its not like you cut your head off and toss it aside then say "oh well lets start again"

go with your gut

I personally would never go for a surgery without consulting at least several orthodontists and oral surgeons. If at least one of them disagrees with the surgical option, I would not have been comfortable with it either. It is very sad, but sometimes the cases that are treatable by orthodontics alone are sent to surgeries to get more money out of them. For a patient, not only it is complicated, lenghty and costly, but also carries an inherent risk of side effects.
I am glad that you have gotten second opinions. Hopefully, orthodontics alone will work for you!
Had full mouth metal braces for 21 months. Debonded April 2013. Now wearing clear plastic retainers every other night.

I have no formal dental or orthodontic education. Hence, all opinions expressed by me on this forum are those of an "informed consumer" and by no means intended as an expert advice.

I am glad too, the oral surgeon I went to see was my orthodontists best friend so that helped they were hand in hand with each other, unlike the other guy who couldnt even pronounce my orthodontists name and its not even that hard to say. and he said he wanted three grand from me. Im like uhm no. you're not getting my 3 grand (that I dont even have). I have a good feeling that the orthodontics alone will work, I already feel a change.
