1st adjustment coming up, what to expect?

#1 Post by threescompany »

I have been braced for almost 4 weeks. My first adjustment is this Friday. My issue is gaps, no crowding to speak of. I don't see much progress so far. Slight spaces have opened up in my bottom front 4 teeth. Maybe the slightest movement in the gap between my upper two front teeth. The ortho estimated only 6 months in braces, and said he'll concentrate on getting the bottom gaps closed up first so he can get the top teeth to close up. To me it looks like the bottom teeth have to move back a bit to get the gaps to close up.

How much progress should I be seeing with 1 month in braces?

Edited to add: What can I expect to happen at the 1st adjustment?

Depending on your situation it could be nothing or it could be painful. For me, most of it was fine. However I have 2 teeth that have to be pulled down a ways and they were tender when I went in for my adjustment. When they put new ligatures they put them on very tightly in a figure 8, and it felt like they were ripping those teeth out of my head. It wasn't anything on the rest of the teeth. The best part is flossing in less than 10 minutes.

You will probably just get your ligatures changed. Maybe in the next few months you will get a new wire and maybe some kind of power chain to close any gaps. This is just a guess though, I could be totally wrong lol

Holy cannoli!

So they tool all ligs off, wire off, and replaced with thicker, stronger wire and a power chain across all the bottom and all but the molar on top (trying to get the last pre-molar to rotate). He said "let's get these spaces closed up immediately". It'll be a gradual progression in intensity each month now. My teeth are so sore now! I'm on regular advil, but still sore. Guess it's soup for dinner tonight. I was supposed to go meet friends to watch the Red Sox game, but no way!

One annoying thing is the way the assistant cut the end of the chain, there's a little pointy bit poking in to my cheek. Not sure if anything can be done about it though. Oh, and the chains are clear, which I'm sure will look so awesome in 4 weeks time.
