Detached Wire

#1 Post by Johnny B »

Hi everyone. I've been browsing this forum for a few days and am finding it very helpful and informative. I actually wasn't planning to register to make posts but I just had my first problem with my new braces and it appears this would be the best place to make an inquiry on a Sunday evening!

I've had my braces on for about a week and have just been getting used to eating solid food and my first real meal has caused a problem----my arch wire became detached from the ring on my molar. After an initial freak out period, I calmed down and was actually able to get it back through the little hole and it appears to be okay.

Should I call the orthodontist tomorrow and let them know what occurred? Is it possible that I messed something up back there?

It looks and feels like it did prior to this little incident but I'm definitely still a bit concerned. Any info or advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Johnny,
If I were you, I would call your Ortho tomorrow. Better safe than sorry. Straighting teeth is a real science. They should not charge you for the visit. I am new to braces too. Almost one month for me and I am not a young person. Hang in there.

Thanks Gizzy.

I'm going to call them first thing in the morning although I tend to think they're going to to tell me it's fine---or at least fine until I go back for my first adjustment in a few more weeks. I'm not young either! I'll be 42 this year and am very excited to finally get my teeth straightened! I just have to get used to this whole eating thing........

Hi Johnny
Eating is a new experience. I eat to survive not to enjoy. Glad your are calling the Ortho tomorrow.
At this time I have a lower bite plate that feels like I have flat ceramic teeth on the bottom. Very hard to chew. After 6 months the bite plate comes out and bottom brackets go on. Thank goodness. Well I am 50 years old! OMG. I was a big chicken but I did it!
We will travel this journey together with our ArchWired friends.

The first wire is pretty tiny and very springy, so popping out of that last bracket or band isn't a big suprise. Any kind of pulling on it will move it, which eating is going to pull on it. You can call them and let them know, some orthos might want you to come right in, some might tell you it's fine as is. Just keep pop'n it back in, and know that the thicker wires don't do that. So you won't have this issue for the next two years.
Good luck :D

Thanks for the info.

I did just call the office and they told me not to worry about it since I was able to get it back in. I sure hope it doesn't keep happening---I'm not even sure how I got the thing back in since everything back there is so tiny!
