Tongue messing up my bite....helppppp

#1 Post by tcoom76 »

Hey I have a somewhat abnormally long tongue and was wandering if that is the reason why I have about a 3/16ths of an open bite....I have developed it through the years....I have had braces on for about 13 months but I am afraid that my open bite will develop due to my tongue as I am on my second set of braces....

I am 21 year old Male, from Hershey PA

PLease Help

THANKS

Tongue vs teeth -- tongue wins.

When I have a pt with a tongue thrust we use either tongue appliances or speech therapy to make sure the pt is swallowing and moving the tongue appropriately. I cant remember having a pt with a 'long' tongue but I imagine it is more of a tongue posturing issue.

I believe I read you have lingual braces. THey often act like their own 'tongue appliance' so you have that going for you. You may want to talk with your doc about the possibility of some myofunctional or speech therapy (or some other means of tongue control) if it is needed in your case.
