What can a retainer do in terms of movement?

#1 Post by NKovaci88 »

I posted a similar question in the "Life after braces" forum, but thought I'd get a better response here...

I had my molds taken last appointment and am currently waiting for my retainer to come in. However, since then a few small spaces have opened up (one is actually quite large, about 1 mm) -- and while I have read that a Hawley retainer can close spaces, what size spaces are we talking about? Because I can't imagine that a retainer would even fit over my teeth anymore. Or can a retainer be adjusted that greatly?

I'm just totally in the dark about how (Hawley) retainers function, I guess. If someone can explain this to me, I'd appreciate it!
