Thinking of getting braces

#1 Post by llehsal »

Hi all, pretty new to the forum. Im seriously thinking of getting braces. Im 25 years old and have some severly jumbled bottom teeth. I could have lived with that, but i realised recently one of my top front teeth is shifting a bit and its causing some concern.

Any advice on this? Im a bit scared it will get worse, has anyone with jumbled bottom teeth and a slight over bite gotten braces? how was it?

My problems were different from yours, but let me say, if you have the desire to improve your teeth and let fear stop you, you will regret it. You will probably end up going ahead with it later and will feel silly for not doing it sooner. I'm 23, and it took me about 4 years to work up the courage to finally do it, and I feel like an idiot for waiting so long! I could have done it earlier, fear was really the only reason why I didn't, and I wish I had. Now I'm in graduate school and teaching undergrads, and trying to get into the professional world. Braces don't affect those things directly, but I was very self-conscious about my teeth, so getting them sorted out sooner would have helped immensely in those endeavors.

It is really not so scary. Try reading up on others' experiences around the forum, go to a couple consults to see how the prices might be or what type of procedure they expect will give you the best results. Knowledge is power! Good luck. :)

The crowding may get worse as you age. I had severe crowding--a much worse case then you I think as I had both severe upper and lower crowding. Throughout my twenties I really noticed that the crowding was getting worse, especially on top. Finally at 34 I got braces and it was the best thing that I ever did. My bottom teeth unraveled astonishingly quickly. I don't know if this is common with everyone, but looking over photos on the board it does seem like the lowers correct pretty quickly. I really urge you do to this for yourself. You won't regret it.

Hi,
I agree with what people have already said. I'm 26 and only got braced 4days ago. It took me nearly 5yrs to gather the courage to get this done, that's my biggest regret.

So if you feel you need it, then have a consultation and start your journey. Good luck.

Glad you decided to get braces.

I thought about getting braces for about 4 years. I had severe crowding on my upper and lower teeth and an overjet on my upper teeth. Because I was over 40 years old, what took me so long to make my decision was waht people I work with would say about me hawearing braces. I knew in the back of my mind, I wouldn't be in braces forever and I also knew that if I didn't get braces it would always be in the back of my mind. Be sure to go to several consultations. I think I went to 4 consultations and got 4 different opinions, with one saying I didn't need braces to one saying I needed several teeth extracted. I went with the orthodontist I felt the most comfortable with and felt waht he said during the consultation sounded right. I never regretted my decision. My time in braces was about one year longer than what he estimated but that didn't bother me at all, my goal was to have my teeth look the best they can.

Good luck.
