What is a normal overbite to have?

#1 Post by NKovaci88 »

I know orthodontists usually leave a bit of an overbite because it's how teeth should naturally look -- but how big is this overbite, usually? I've heard it's about 1 mm, but I've seen some final result pics where the overbite looked even a big larger (2-3 mm). Is there a standard?

Hi, I was curious about this also :) ...so I asked a couple of people in my family (my wife & daughter) who have both completed orthodontic treatment in the last couple of years. I had them open their mouths and bite down so I could view their front alignment. Both of them have overbites that look like around 1/16", so I think that must be the average clearance for the top arch (but I'm no ortho). My interest in this has to do w/ the fact that I have no overbite at all, which causes my top & bottom front teeth to hit when I bite down. This condition has damaged my 4 lower front teeth. I want to fix them, but now I need braces to tilt open my arch & create a slight overbite. Otherwise, anything that my dentist uses to crown these lower teeth will be chomped 'cause of the lack of overbite.
