Essix retainer mold question

Essix retainer mold question

How and when are molds for Essix retainers done? My ortho said at my next appointment he was going to remove some of the back braces, place a fixed retainer on my lowers and do an impression for the Essix for the top teeth. How can he do that if there are still brackets on my front teeth?

I had molds done 5 weeks prior to my debanding date. I have an upper hawley retainer, but the assistant removed my powerchains and did the impression and then I brushed my teeth and she replaced the chains. The model was sent to a lab in which they remove the braces off the model and mold the retainer. My lower fixed was placed at my debanding.

Started the journey for the second time on January 10th 2008~Ceramic uppers and metal lowers. Removed on June 2nd 2009.
