Good news and also a question...

#1 Post by Lavender »

When I went for my adjustment on Wednesday I got my bottom bands off, and they wire tied all the teeth with brackets together. I had an impression done and get my bottom retainer on April 1st! Woo hoo! I chose a glow in the dark neon yellow/green. I wanted purple, but they didn't have it in the glow in the dark colors. I'll probably still get purple for my top retainer when I get to that point. I'm getting one thats called an LB, they said it's very close to a hawley.
The question I have is, what is a coffin spring? I was supposed to get one on the top when I was there the other day, but because there was so much going on (removing bands, doing impression, picking retainer colors etc.) it was forgotten about by the assistant. I assume Ill get it next time. It sounds horrible! I mean, coffin spring, who wouldn't think that sounded bad? Does anyone know what this is or what it's for? I just want to be prepared for next time. Any help would be appreciated.

ORTHODONTIC SPRINGS

Force-producing modules or appliance components, made of metal.

• Coffin spring

An omega-shaped (Ω) spring made of heavy-gauge wire, spanning across the palate as part of some removable orthodontic appliances (e.g. the Bimler or the Crozat appliance). The function of a Coffin spring is to offer the possibility of expansion or constriction of the maxillary dental arch.

The Coffin spring is bent distally closed. The appliance can be designed with an acrylic overhang for the lower incisors

Thanks so much for the reply.
You said in your post "An omega-shaped (Ω) spring made of heavy-gauge wire, spanning across the palate as part of some removable orthodontic appliances (e.g. the Bimler or the Crozat appliance). "

I'm confused though because I was supposed to get it on top and I still have braces on top. Has anyone ever heard of this somehow being attached to braces? Also why would this be done at almost the end of treatment?
