Light at the End of the Tunnel

#1 Post by Nawners »

It's been just about 22 months since I had my upper arch braced, and suffice to say, there has been very little movement. I had my 15th or 16th adjustment yesterday, and my Orthodontist finally admitted that what he was doing wasn't going to close my stubborn gaps. I've had interproximal ties on all uppers, and a powerchain over those, for months. They never budged and I never felt any discomfort, although I hoped for it every time. I've also been wearing class II elastics in an X formation 24/7 for at least a year to fix my deep bite (admittedly, I wasn't always diligent in wearing them, but have been recently). That hasn't changed a thing either.
Back in the beginning of my treatment, I had a powerchain from lateral to lateral on the top, and the gaps between the lateral and central teeth did close! I was so excited to see movement! Then my Orthodontist decided to put a full chain on the top, and my obstinate teeth moved right back where they were previous to the partial chain.
I suggested yesterday that he try the same thing again, then at my next adjustment go from canine to canine, then bicuspid to biscuspid and so on, until all gaps were closed. He thought it was a great idea, and instructed the tech to put interproximal ties from lateral to central, central to central then central to lateral (hope that makes sense!) and to put a chain over those. The tech only did the ties from left lateral to left central, and over the two centrals. I commented that she forgot one and she insisted that he only said to put those two ties on. I probably should have been more insistent, but she is a fairly new tech and is very nice, so I didn't want to make her feel bad. So now the gap between the left lateral and central is closed already, but the gap on the other side isn't. Luckily I go back in two weeks to have the canines and so forth tied, so I hope it doesn't set it back too much!
Anyway, I am happy to say that finally there is movement and discomfort and I hope this course of treatment does the job!
Does anyone have any similar accounts? My Orthodontist said he has never encountered anyone with more stubborn teeth in his 20+ years practicing.

Thanks for your reply, Ken! :)
I hope you're right about my stubborn teeth staying in place when I'm finally finished. I actually feared the opposite, and although my ortho prescribes Essix retainers to wear at night, I plan on wearing them 24/7 at first.
Hope you start to see some good progress as well! It tends to get a little frustrating, at least for me, when nothing's going on in your teeth!
