Getting braces removed!

#1 Post by -Michael- »

I'm finally getting my braces off, but I have a question about the removal process.

I go in on Nov 4th and they will 'section' my braces. They made it sound like they cut the wire in sections. Doesn't anyone know why they do this? I can only think that perhaps it is to ease the tension off the teeth, rather than just popping off the brackets.

Then I go in Nov 11th and they will remove the braces and do the retainer mold thing. They also said they will clean/whiten and fix any problems after removal of the braces. I wasn't aware of this, but apparently it's all included in the lump fee I paid at the very beginning of the process. I paid 5.6k for my braces. Initial retainers are also included. Woohoo! I'm happy about that because I already checked with my Dentist and professional whitening is not cheap! They had three different options, and the cheapest started at around $350 and the most expensive was about $900! Ouch. So I'm extra glad my ortho takes care of all this. Great service!

Then I go in on Nov 13 for my retainer fitting.

So going back to my original question, what is the deal with sectioning and has anyone else heard of this? I have Damon 3 brackets on upper and lowers. Next month will have been 20 months exactly.

Thanks,
Michael

Hmmm. I just got them off Monday. He started on my upper left 2nd molar bracket and just started popping from left to right 2nd molar and that took about 10 seconds.

The bottom was different. I had molar bands on my bottom 2nd molars. He clipped the wire on each side of the molar bands then started popping off the rest of the brackets. He removed that wire in one piece with brackets . Then clipped my molar bands off ...that was in a blink of an eye.
The glue and cement that remained on my teeth was then removed with an electric drill/sander instrument. That was the only uncomfortable part.

Weird, so I guess I've got the only ortho who does things this way. lol.

I'll have to report back. Maybe I'm understanding wrong.

Karess: I think I may have over explained myself lol.. The top brackets and archwire were ripped/snapped off all in one piece. That took like 10 seconds .

The bottom , he clipped the wire by the last molar bands. Then ripped/snapped it all off in one piece. The only thing left were my molar bands that were still on. He clipped those off at the end ...

Ok, to clear this up...

I went in today. They took off the powerchain they had running across all my teeth (upper and lower). For the top wire, they cut the ends of the wire off. So the wire now goes across my 4 front teeth only. At the end of the wire they still have the little hook for elastics.

Next appointment I get my braces off which is next Tues. So exactly 7 days I get them off. Woohoo!

They told me the reason they 'section' my braces is to let those back teeth settle really good before completely removing the braces.

My ortho also informed me that they will clean and whiten my smile after removal of the braces. They said expect the appointment to take about 1.5 hours. It's part of the process and standard for all patients and built into the cost of $5.6k. I was VERY glad to hear this because my dentist charges $500-$1000 for professional whitening.

Then I go in next Thursday (2 days after the braces come off) to get my retainer.
