is it normal for the orthodontist to put on brackets only?

#1 Post by 0o0chris0o0 »

today i got those little spacer things in my back molars, and i got brackets glued on all my teeth too, but no archwire or anything else. is this normal? because i heard the spacers are supposed to be put on first, then you wait 2 weeks, then the brackets and archwire are supposed to be put on at the same time, and now that i know that it seems kinda useless to put on the brackets so early if they're not even doing anything...

yes its normal....thats exactly what my ortho did in my case. I had to have two different sets of spacers put in because I had to have 8 molar bands in total. The last week of spacers he placed the brackets on with no wires and he said it was so that my mouth (and I) could get used to them. Hope this helps! and congratz on starting treatment!
2/26/08- 4 spacers & brackets
3/4/08- 4 molar bands & 8 spacers
3/8/08- 4 premolars pulled
3/11/08- WIRES put on!! Ouuch! & 4 more molar bands
3/18/08- TPA put on and a lower lingual arch Torture Time -30 months
Next adjustment: August 12th
Last adjustment: July 16th

thanks for the replies, thats one less thing on my mind.... also is there a minimum amount of days you have to wait for the spacers to move your molars? My next appointment is in 2 weeks and i'd like to reschedule that to an earlier date so i can get fully braced as fast as possible.... :D

brackets

I would think that your teeth would be less sensitive before the spacers, which is another advantage of having the brackets put on early as yours were. They'll be wired up soon enough : )

I had spacers put in and had to wait 3 weeks before I got my molar bands. I went in for my molar bands and my penduluma nd still had one molar that was too tight so another 3 weeks for that molar band. I go in Wed. to get my final molar band and then maybe 1 or 2 appointsments till I get my bottom braces. Currently I have 5 molar bands and will have 6 after wednesday.

yeah, same deal with me...i have the brackets first, including the 8 spacers and the wires were put on today, two weeks after the spacers. the wire is sooooo much better than brackets alone... but let me tell you what, i am so sore.

For me the spacers were horrible. the Ortho assistant who put them in said "this is going to hurt you alot more that it will me" The next time I went in to get my band put on she came over to my chair and I told her that she was not allowed to stick her hands in my mouth ever again.

the spacers weren't that bad. they hurt a little but was nothing to make a big deal about...........

dang it feels kinda awkward having wireless braces....unfunctional braces in my mouth...oh well, gotta be patient i guess

yeah, my spacers dug into my gums constantly, so much that the ortho said something about how irritated they looked=( but i needed them, even after two weeks, my bottom molars were still pretty tight, it was fun getting the bands on today...

this is getting pretty ridiculous... I had my spacers put in almost two weeks ago; 8 of them, and now, about a few days before my next appointment for the bottom brackets and archwires, one of my spacers has come out for the second time. Actually, I most likely ate it again somehow. I wouldn't have a problem with them falling out or becoming loose because it would mean they're doing their job, however when I went in to have it replaced a day after it fell out for the first time, it was a real struggle for the ortho to get it in there because he said it was still very tight with little space between the molars. And now its fallen out again and I can't seem to understand why.

anyone else??

i know that one of mine kept moving around every time i ate and brushed, so much that i had to shove it back in with tweezers. my gum was really irritated right there...and they still said it was a pretty tight squeeze *shrug* i guess the moral of that story is "that is why i am not the doctor"... hope they feel better soon...when are you going back?
