Carlette,

Most people will think you are crazy for a very short amount of time. Then they 'll get over it, and It won't be a big deal. You'll ber happy and they'll get over it.

Good lluck at the ortho appt.

My husband, mom, and best friend all think I'm nuts! And when strangers hear I'm getting braces for the 3rd time in my life, they think I'm a wacko too. I don't care! I'm doing it, I want to, and I know its going to be worth it in the long run! Kudos to you for seeking support here, and I look forward to hearing how it goes!

I just went to the orthodontist and told them I want my teeth fixed. Mine are pretty bad so it didn't take any convincing :)

I just looked at who took my insurance and started calling I didn't ask a dentist about it.

You are lucky your insurance will pay for this. Mine doesn't for adults. I'm hoping I can negotiate a deal to incur the majority of cost next year when I can fund my FSA account. I also can make the promise of treatment for my two children that will DEFINITELY need braces in the near future.

Everything's negotiable, right?

Ortho sure can be! My kid's ortho gave us a break on all 3 kids because our (federal gov. employee) insurence doesn't even cover ortho for kids, so the ortho felt bad and gave us a huge break on the cost because he knew I'd be bringing the other 2 kids in. He cut us a deal on them as well.

My ortho (diff. doc.) wouldn't negotiate, but did give me a 10% discount for paying in full. (I used my Visa then paid that off a month later with our tax return).

I kind of thought that after I went to my initial appointment, it would be an easy decision and I'd move on. Not so the case. The ortho recommended braces on the bottom and said that my tops were fine. There could be a slight improvement or added fullness if I chose to have them on the top.

My spouse is like, 'whatever makes you happy', which is great. Problem is, everyone else thinks I'm nuts. They wonder why I'd even bother with the bottoms and since I don't really need them on the top, why would I incur the cost, pain and inconvenience.

Part of me says, 'screw them all' it's my mouth and I want perfect teeth, however, part of me dreads having to show up and face clients and coworkers with braces on my teeth and hearing everyone say, 'why would you get them your teeth look fine?'.

I went ahead and had impressions and xrays taken when I went to my initial appointment on Monday, so now I have a few weeks before my consult and I have a bit more time to ponder and be wishy washy about this.

Okay, I feel a bit better now after jotting this all down and will hope that the solutions will come easy to me one night whilst dreaming. I'm generally a go getter and stick with my guns but for some reason, I'm all over the board with this. Vanity I guess...

Wow - am I really lucky or what? NO ONE said I was nuts for getting braces. My problem didn't show, either. I'm wearing braces to deal with periodontal disease. I had crooked, crowded bottom teeth, but they really didn't show. My top teeth looked fine.

I believe I'm seeing a pattern here...keep my mouth shut and, in the words of Mr. YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE COME HERE YOU SHOULD GO TO THE COTTAGE DOROTHY! OH SUGAR BARBARA STANWYCK, just do it! Y'all are just too nice to say it.

Not sure why I feel like I have to have approval/justification before moving forward. Some of my friends have suggested I consider other enhancements before spending the money on my teeth. Nice, huh?

You'd think I lived on Wisteria Lane

Oh well...

Thanks.

I loved the Wysteria lane comment!

When I don't smile wide my teeth look great. My problem is from the canines back. Even my sister never realized that my bottom canine rests in front of the top one!

My ortho's advice to me..."tell those who ask you have a bite problem and leave it at that". No flowery explanations. The choice to make this change is yours.

Then my ortho's assistant told me, "Congratulations for taking care of your health and putting yourself first." This advice actually made me start to tear up, because she is right.

I felt very comfortable with the decision when I left their office.

I will be getting my braces on Wed.
