Penguins (& it had to turn up eventually...pain)

#1 Post by KK Cat »

Had my 6th adjustment today. At my last adjustment I got springs (closing loops) on both upper sides where I had premolar extractions.

This visit ortho told me he was "activating" the springs and then I heard him say to assistant that he would give me penguins. Now I was sure I had totally misheard and was wondering 'what the heck are penguins', turns out they are elastics as many of you probably already know. It sounded so funny :o

I have been really lucky so far and not had anything other than very mild discomfort in the first 2 weeks, even spacers for me weren't an issue. I knew straight away today was going to be different, it was the first time that I could feel real tightness (and that was before the elastics went on). My teeth were quite sore all afternoon and I decided to take advice I've seen Meryaten give to others and take a painkiller 30 min before dinner. Even with that it was still quite sore to bite into things, brushing and flossing was OK though, mind you I got that in before I figured painkillers would wear off.

The roof of my mouth behind the teeth felt quite numb earlier but is OK now. I have to wear the elastics 'as much as I can' he says, I asked is that 24/7 bar eating & brushing and he said that would be good.

OH no! I am so sorry!

I had a blank look on my face when you were talking about peguins :)

I have scandinavians...whatever that means!

That is not good that you have pain, what a bummer...and here I thought since I didn't have pain the first few weeks I was in the clear (I am sure people are laughing out loud all over the board at this statement)...I guess ignorance is bliss?

Keep up the drugs and I hope the pain goes away soon!

OK, pain might be overstating it a little, from reading other posts I know that lots of people are in real "I could nearly cry" pain. It wasn't that bad, I could have managed without the ibuprofen but seeing as I managed 9 months so far without needing them I figured one wasn't going to hurt. I was glad I took it too, I could really tell the difference after 20 mins. I mainly took it because I was starting to get twinges going right up into my head and I felt it was better to head it off rather than let it develop.

It's nearly 7 hours since I took painkiller so I'm sure it has worn off now. No pain now unless I bite down/chew, other than that it's just a bit of discomfort. I took out the elastics earlier to eat dinner, trying to get the right one back on later was fun  Hard to get it to slip off my finger onto the hook, got it eventually though. I'm sure it will get easier with practice.
