Hey COndoor, and welcome!

Wow those videos really show what happens, don't they?

So in your case as well I believe your lips WILL look different due to your jaw slightly moving back. Especially if you are having extractions, like the patient did in that video, your jaw will move back to close up spaces even more. But I don't think its necessarily a bad thing! To me, at least, the patient's mouth at the end of treatment looks much more attractive! Once the teeth are moved back into correct position, I think your lips will just slightly move back and into their proper position as well, but your lips in the picture look nice and full to me so I don't think they will get flatter, just align differently.

It's just my opinion, but I think you will be happy with the result!

Interesting picture show. Personally I think that the facial profile improved on the kid in the video after treatment...

Changes in the facial profile is a very delicate subject. Having had 4 premolars extracted myself I do share the fears of many orthodontic patients that I will end up with a flatter facial profile and that my lips will collapse. As far as I have been able to find out there is nothing that indicates that extraction patient WILL NECESSARILY end up with a flatter profile that non-extraction patients. See: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9743131 and http://www.angle.org/anglonline/?reques ... &page=0386 and read the follwing from : http://www.angelfire.com/journal/braces ... istan.html:
Conclusion: It is therefore evident that 1st Premolar extractions seem to have a small effect on profile but not necessarily detrimental. Growth is the over-riding factor, and the evaluation of the profile is largely subjective ranging from community, sex and race. The main determining factor is the patients own existing soft tissue profile and thickness. It is important to observe that different people respond separately to the same orthodontic braces treatment regimen. Every patient should be categorized individually according to his or her own lip, chin and nose morphology, and a careful judgment should be made regarding the main complaint of the patient. Patient should be explained that extractions would solve part of the esthetic problem before embarking on the treatment.
In other words the effects of extraction to the facial profile is controversial.

Personally I will survive with minor changes on facial profile and lips if the end result of my orthodontic treatment is great-looking teeth. :D

Ive got my fingers crossed, hope that when my teeth are straightened and lined up it will make my lips look slimmer and flatter from the side.

I swear I thought that was me in that picture. We have the same looking mouth and almost the same teeth except mines protrudes a little more.

I had the same problem, I wanted flatter lips and a chin. But unfortunately the non-extraction route not only didn't fix my puffed up lips, it also left an overjet same as before, I believe because there was not enough room.

Now I'm going for my second braces, but this time with extractions and a different ortho.

Oh if your going extraction route, ask your ortho if they will use an appliance for maximum anchorage, my sister had braces and her lips/mouth is puffy. They didn't apply maximum anchorage and her lips looks the same, just straighter teeth.

I'm asian and I have bimaxillary protrusion like the video. So hopefully everything goes well.

Hi, so what your saying is that the first time you had braces they didnt line the front incisors up with the rest of the upper arch? Also now that your getting your teeth done again, do you think your lip profile will change? Lastly what do you mwan by tha anchorage?

Thanks

I learned a lot about bimaxillary protrusion and maximum anchorage by reading these articles.

http://www.angle.org/anglonline/?reques ... &page=0333

http://www.angle.org/anglonline/?reques ... &page=0715

http://www.angle.org/anglonline/?reques ... &page=1074

I can't really say for sure if the second time around will change my profile because I just got braces last week and had 4 extractions couple days ago. How's your gums/soft tissue, do they stick out from the front?

Ok, out of those 3 is the nance the least painful?
Meryaten wrote:COndoor - to close the extraction gap, not only do front teeth move back, but the back teeth tend to move forward. The analogy I usually use to help explain this is two people, one at each end of a stretched bungee cord - both will be pulled towards the middle. However, if one person hangs onto a stretched bungee cord that is fixed to steel post, then the post stays put, and the person is pulled towards it. The post is, in this analogy, the anchorage that Vista mentioned. So, to make sure the gap is closed only by moving the front teeth backward into the gap, extras such as headgear, miniscrew implants, or a Nance are typically brought to bear in bimaxillary protrusion cases.

Mines look like this, except the acrylic button is light pink not green. No one even notice I had a nance on.

I did have a little speech problem pronouncing some words, only for like 2 days until I got use to it. It almost like wearing a top retainer, but not as bad.
