FETISH ALERT: One big reason to keep your photos PRIVATE

This is the place to post general questions and comments about all areas of orthodontic treatment. Before you post a question, use the forum's SEARCH tool to see if your question has already been answered!

New Members: YOU MUST MAKE A POST WITHIN 24 HOURS OF REGISTERING OR YOUR ACCOUNT WILL BE DELETED. In other words, don't sign up unless you plan to actively participate in the message board immediately. This is necessary to keep out spammers and lurkers with bad intentions. Of course, you can read most forums on the board without registering.

DO NOT POST FULL-FACE PHOTOS or personal contact information on this website. We have had problems with people re-posting members' photos on fetish websites. Please only post photos of your teeth, not your whole face. Keep your email and your personal information private. Thank you.

FETISH ALERT: One big reason to keep your photos PRIVATE

#1 Post by bbsadmin »

Over the years, I've talked about braces fetish websites and how the members troll the internet looking for photos of (mainly) girls in braces.

Well get a hold of this one. One of the people on this thread WAS a member here (has since been banned).

I don't know how they find these photos -- I assume that the photos are totally public (not made private). The girls in these photos would be mortified to know that some guys halfway around the world are getting their rocks off from their innocent silly photos:

http://www.bracesforum.net/smf/archive_ ... 3#msg25773

There are several other websites like this one, with thread upon thread of urls to photobucket, imageshack, webshots, flickr, myspace, and other photo sites.

This is the number one reason I strongly urge you guys NOT to post a full face photo....unless the prospect of your wired mouth being some guy's wet dream is OK with you.

******

In case you have trouble logging in to that site, here is what our former member's message says. The thread (90 pages long) was started in 2003 and its subject is Photos of Braces. This post was made in June 2006:

www.archwired.com is a good place to find photos of girls showing off their braces. Simply for treatment comfort and such. I joined to give people advice as well as to update my fetish folder.

I have something to say if you are going to join and or take photos from there.

DO NOT inquire in your personal profile for the board or private message ANY of the members that you have a "braces fetish" or anything of the sort. The moderator of the site will ban you and take your IP address so you can no longer access the site. If you are going to get photos from this site, here are some tips to consider.

Save them to your computer and then add them to your own photo collection online, or put them in an online folder and THEN link them to this board.

Good places to put your own photos, free of charge are...

www.flickr.com
www.photobucket.com

This is the best possible thing you can do.

DO NOT DIRECTLY LINK. It will go right back to the moderator and then once she sees the board and or site is swarming with people with a braces fetish, she will probably close the board. AND WE DO NOT WANT THAT!

As for copyright issues...All the photos are taken and are shown to show people them. If they didn't want people to see photos of their teeth, then they would not take them and post them. So I find this a nice way to find pictures and tons of updates on girls or a girl's teeth you particularly like.

Hope this helps, but it sucks because you have to scroll through tons of posts with words and such just to get to the pictures. :?

...and after this post are several other posts with line upon line of links to hundreds of photobucket and webshots photos that were innocently posted and made public, mainly by teenage girls.

I also want to urge you....if you have photos on a service like photobucket, webshots, or whatever, go over to that German braces fetish site, create an account, then do a search on your photobucket user name and see if any of your photos are on there. One of our members tells me that indeed there are references to SEVERAL of our members on that site.

If you find your photos on the German site, there are two things you can do:

1. Email or PM me and give me an example of one of the urls and I will try to handle it with the owner of the site. I have no idea if he'd cooperate with me.

2. Email or PM the German board's owner (Marty) and tell him that you want references to your photos deleted now and in the future. Again, I don't know if he'd cooperate, but if enough people email or PM him, he will get the picture.

Thanks, Lynn, for your constant vigilance!

Wow, that is a scary post.

I registered for that site, and noted in the user agreement the following:
You agree, through your use of this forum, that you will not post any material which is false, defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, invasive of a person's privacy, adult material, or otherwise in violation of any International or United States Federal law. You also agree not to post any copyrighted material unless you own the copyright or you have written consent from the owner of the copyrighted material. Spam, flooding, advertisements, chain letters, pyramid schemes, and solicitations are also forbidden on this forum.
Um..."sexually oriented" and "invasive of privacy" kind of count here, I think. And whoever takes the pictures owns the copyright to them, so no matter that the poster brushes it off by saying obviously by posting we want to share the pics, only the original owner is allowed to copy, reproduce, or otherwise use the pic without permission. So that is clearly a violation of copyright if they are saving them and posting them online. (Direct links to hosted photos is a bit fuzzier, though.)

Another safety suggestion: while I know that some people like to have accounts with all their photos in one place, if you use image hosting sites such as tinypic.com or tinyurl.com you can get the code to post a pic without having a place someone else could come along and find. They kind of disappear into the cyber-ether once you navigate away from the page with the codes for them. (Thus, if you want to reuse that pic, you need to copy down and save the URL somewhere or you'll have to reupload the pic the next time you want to post it.)

And they're not linked to a username or even other pics you upload, so someone couldn't come along and find your account and plunder it for pics. (They could still right-click and save them to their own computers, though.) There is a search function, so don't tag them "braces" unless you want them to come up on a search. I generally don't tag at all.

If you want to have a place to keep all your photos together, I recommend a service like Winkflash.com that will host, but not make your pics accessible to anyone but the account owner or people you have chosen to "share" the pics with (via e-mail).

wow...that really sucks! i still dont think i will ever understand a braces fetish. some things i can understand....but that i cannot. one person on that site has a fetish for SILVER fillings....

glad you are looking out for everyone...i hope that none of our members have pictures on there.

i feel bad for those girls because they seem to have just taken pictures with their friends.....and some guy is now looking at them....wow

i was curious so i typed in braces to photobucket....and found 5,617 for braces images. wow....i guess its easy for these people to find the pictures....

i guess what i found most disturbing is the guy who is telling everyone all about this site and how to get pictures without you knowing or without anyone getting mad. it takes all kinds. oh and one member who works or has worked at a dental office with a braces fetish...i dont like that at all. its one thing for someone to have the fetish behind closed doors....but when they are there and looking at your teeth in person and oh man...i dont like that

i guess its good that i dont like to take pictures of my(FULL FACE) with braces on in the first place

thanks for looking out

SMIles

fetishists or not, once you post on the net, it is out there for people to use or abuse. I've been burned badly by posting pics several years ago and will not do so again. I've learned.

Can these sick puppies harvest pics from a photobucket account even if they haven't been posted on archwired?

I have told this to my kids, and I think it holds true for everyone:

Once you post something on the internet, it may be there forever. Even if you remove it, it may still be found on the internet archive. You never know who will copy your photos and where else they may post them, in places beyond your control. That goes for text and video, as well as photos.

****

I read all the time about how the younger generation is posting all sorts of stuff on their Facebook and MySpace accounts, and then prospective employers see it years later. Doesn't anyone believe in privacy anymore? I mean, this Facebook stuff -- with your friends knowing everything you buy and the movies you see -- WHY would you want your friends to know EVERYTHING you do? To us "older" people (I'm in my 40s) it is just plain strange. I think the younger generation will learn the hard way that privacy is a very important thing, and there is value in keeping some things totally to yourself.

Of course. Look at the line upon line of photobucket links on that site. I've seen others like it on other fetish sites, too. They are continually scanning the photo hosting sites. If your photos aren't private, they're up for grabs.

p.s. LadyJ, thanks for the tip about tinyurl, tinypic, and winkflash.

Somebody asked how to make your Photobucket photos private instead of public.

I don't know, since I don't have a photobucket account, but I assume there must be an option to choose.

If any of you have used photobucket (or other photo sharing sites) and want to give instructions on how to make your photos private within those sites, I would appreciate you posting the instructions here.

Thanks, ilovemacs. When I went into my account, that option had already been ticked so I guess I must have done it when I signed up (thank goodness).

I just want to point out that only makes the album private so people cannot browse through your entire photo collection on Photobucket. It does NOT stop people from viewing individual photos if they know the URL. For example, if I post a pic here on my blog using the [IMG] tag it shows up in my post. Right-clicking on that pic and choosing "Properties" will show the URL to where I have it stored in Photobucket. Anybody can copy and paste that URL elsewhere, and view the photo.
