Angry and Dissatisfied with Orthodontist

#1 Post by karamon »

Hi,
I'd like some advice on how to handle this situation. I've had my braces on since Feb 2006 and was supposed to get them off at the end of July. Well, one of my bottom front teeth was a little torqued so he replaced bracket and put a slingshot thingy on to turn the tooth. Well, I wish I had stopped there. Since July we've been tweaking the bottom front four teeth and now all of them are buckling and turning and torquing. I told him in Sept that I had a huge party (in laws 50th anniv) on Dec 22nd and that I wanted the braces off for that party. No problem he said. He has replaced and moved these brackets around 7 times since July. Well here we are at the end of November and my teeth are worse than ever. I don't want them off if they are crooked. I paid $7200 for these things and I want to be happy for that price.

So....do I

a) tell him I want a refund (like that would happen)
b) tell him I want to finish treatment with a new orthodontist
c) give him endless more chances

Are there other options? What would you all do? I am at my wit's end...

Karin

Another alternative (to be used in conjunction with the others) is to have your braces removed, temporarily, for the anniversary party. Then, continue treatment, either with your current ortho or with another.

Several people have had their braces removed for events like weddings. But, you should ask to have them removed at no additional cost, particularly if you decide to continue with your current ortho.

Could you get the top off and continue correcting the lowers?

Sometimes this cannot be done, but if your bite is good and you're torquing and shifting just the lower teeth, maybe (fingers crossed) your ortho can debond the uppers for you now for the party...

Another option, perhaps???

I had a lower tooth twisted at the end and we debonded and then used retainers to fix that one tooth. BUT, it sounds like it's more than just one tooth for you at this point.

Let us know how it all goes!!!

All good advice

Thanks everyone for your advice. You know I want to talk to him privately when I see him, so as not to complain in front of his other patients, but it never seems to be the right time. He's in and out so fast. But I think I will do that.

I'm resolved to the fact that my target date will not be met. Another incentive for getting them off in 2007 is that I've put aside the $500 for the fixed retainers in my FSA and that will be lost if not used this year. I told him that to give him a vested interest in my deadline but my teeth or his skill is not cooperating.

Jennielee, I asked him to debond the top and he says we'll see...I like your idea about a retainer because I know that sometimes they are used to fix the bottom front four instead of braces. I'm going to call him Monday and try to get an appt and will mention it to him.

I really don't want to spend more money with another ortho...

Jennielee, I don't know if you remember me...I also got the Opals and Damons because of your postings. The brackets were great, I'm not sure about my orthodontist. I wonder if he took a weekend seminar in orthodontics sometimes. Anyway, just venting now...

Thanks again for your advice. I will keep my temper in check when I speak to him.

I hope you get it all sorted out! Good luck! Usually a sit-down talk with the ortho will fix things up nicely! :D
