ANOTHER Very Painful & Disappointing Adjustment Today!

#1 Post by braced4asmile »

Hi everyone ~
For the last 2 adjustments, I feel like I've taken 1 step forward and 2 steps back in my journey. At my adjustment today, I had some set-backs. For 10 minutes, the assistant tried to get one of my doors open without any luck. The ortho tried for another 10 minutes without luck as well. This is, by the way, my most tender tooth. The assistant told the ortho that this bracket's door has a history of being stuck. Within seconds, the ortho said, "well, I'm done with this bracket then," and proceeded to take a pliers to it. O - M - G!!!!!! She YANKED it off with tears rolling down my eyes from the pain!

So, there's the PAIN in my adjustment story today. Here's the DISAPPOINTMENT ... Today, she set me up with a periodontist to look at the muscles under the bottom teeth. Apparently with all of the movement I've had, the muscles have loosened up and some of the gum is receding. Not only is it an added expense, but I'm not looking forward to more PAIN! The other disappointment came when she said that we're going to spend the next 2-3 visits (3-4 months) working on straightening the bottom teeth. It looks like there is a lot more work ahead than I was expecting. Guess I just have to brace myself for my time behind bars. :(

With 4 Ibuprofens in me, (2 before and 2 after), I'm going to take advantage of eating soft food and eat my frozen Dove Bar. God must have made Dove bars for moments like this. I might just have to take their advice and drink some wine before my next adjustment!

Yikes, I'm glad you're feeling better. Maybe you could let them know that it really hurt you, physically when they did that to your tender tooth so that they make exercise more caution the next time.

Funny thing is they know from past experience that that's my tender tooth and I squirm when lots of pressure is put on it. I know that they have to do their job and get the bracket and wire on, so I try to be patient and not think about the pain. Today, my eyes just began swelling up with tears from the pain. It was just a natural reaction to the pain. The ortho stopped and gave me a break, but there's not much she could do other than empathize with me! I don't think I've ever felt that much pain; not even giving birth! (But they always say you forget the pain once you have your beautiful baby in your hands!)

KK ... What do you think she was referring to when she said muscles? I'm confused! What did they do for your perio disease?

OUCH, I read your post slowly and could feel and relate to your pain. Sometimes they just don't understand how much a tooth is in pain because they are looking at it or touching it. It's like touching someone's bruise. You can't feel their pain but you can!

I know orthodontist and their assistants have to do their job regardless of pain involved sometimes. My ortho assistant has braces herself and she hasn't had an adjustment in 6 months because she said the adjustments hurt and she's a big chicken. She can understand my pain and is always trying to be delicate because of some painful adjustments that I've had in the past.

Enjoy that Dove bar! You truly earned it! I just had some cool water and it felt SOOOO good on my tender lower teeth. I bet a Dove bar is a lot better though! Hope you feel better soon

Awww, just wanted to say Hi and hope you are feeling better. I had a "wing" break off one of my brackets... and my ortho came over to look at it and then all of a sudden he's got a pair of pliers, and then.... clamp... he just rips the thing off. Same as what happened to you. I have no idea why they don't even warn you!!! Good luck with your other appointment!
