Discolored Tooth

#1 Post by TheUnk311 »

So I had my braces removed recently.. Now I didn't notice it too much before braces, possibly because it was crooked, I don't know. I didn't notice it too much during braces either because of the braces on them I guess..

One of my upper 2 front teeth is darker than the rest. I notice it, but am not sure if other people do. I asked my dentist about it and he recommended a veneer or crown, and whitening would not work. It was very noticeable, to me, when I took some pics of my naked teeth that I was going to post here, it seemed much more noticeable in a picture than when looking in a mirror..

I was wondering if anyone else has something like this and what they did, if anything, to remedy it?

Now I've become a little self-conscious about it, maybe I'm just overreacting, afterall I am my own worst critique!

I had a discolored front tooth. It slowly discolored over the years after I was kicked in the mouth by my sister (accidently of course) as a teen. I ended up having a root canal done on it and they internally bleached it. They squirted bleaching solution in the root canal hole and covered it with a temporary filling. In a week I went back and they placed the permanent filling. I was so pleased with the result. If a whole tooth is discolored something might be going on internally to the tooth. I was told the interior of the tooth had lost its vitality, thus a root canal. Did you take a blow to mouth at some point?

Not that I can remember. I think it's been this way for many years, just never really as noticeable.

Internal bleeching sounds better. I think I'd rather have something more permanent than a veneer.

Here are a few pics, one taken in a different lighting. It looks just a tiny bit longer than the one next to it, didn't really notice it when the ortho first did the shaping. I've decided so try some whitestrips and hope the discolored tooth doesn't become more apparent..

Maybe it's not as bad as I think it is, what do you guys think?

Funny this topic came up...I was going to post something similar. My front right tooth is discoloring too...seems to be a little bit gray. I didn't get hit or anything. The last weekend of July...for no apparent reason, I almost went through the roof when something cold hit it. It also felt quite uncomfortable when I bit into something. Went to the Ortho. and he saw nothing...went to the dentist and he too found nothing, but thought perhaps a nerve might be dying. Since it's discoloring...this leads me to believe he might have been right. I no longer get the shooting pain from cold...but the tooth still doesn't feel quite right either.

I'm also having some reaction on other teeth to cold too. Don't know why this is happening all of a sudden. Next month it'll be 2 years that I've had the braces. I've had discomfort when my teeth shifted since getting braced...but everything I'm going through all of a sudden is entirely different.

I also had a filling replaced about 2 weeks ago and it too is being bothered by cold and also hurts when I chew something on that side of my mouth.

It's aggravating to have gone through 2 years of braces... relatively uneventful I might add...and now start having issues that are probably unrelated to the whole brace thing. Oh well...what doesn't kill us makes us stronger...right?

I don't recall ever having extra sensitivity on that tooth. I think there are a few reasons why teeth can become discolored though. Hopefully your other teeth becoming senstive isn't a sign that the same will happen to them. Would certainly bring it up again at your next appt.

Looking at some older pictures it looks like I always had the slight discoloration, I don't think it has gotten worse over the years. Think I'm just going to leave it alone for now, I've had enough going on with my mouth the past 2 years haha. I stopped the whitestrips, dentist said my gums were a little imflammed which is normal for just having braces removed, and after reading up on the strips I think I'm going to hold off and give my gums and well deservered break from everything.
