How frequently do you get your wires clipped?

#1 Post by cowlypso »

I'm in powerchains and closing my extraction gaps. I've been going in to get my archwires clipped every 2-3 weeks. Not a ton is sticking out, but it's enough to eat a hole through my cheek.

Anybody else? How frequently do you go in?

When I wore springs to close my extraction gaps it seemed like the wires were constantly poking out. And my brackets go all the way back to my wisdom teeth. At first I tried to go in and get them clipped, but it became too hard with my work schedule so I just started using wax all the time. Alot of wax. Poking wires have been one of the more painful aspects of my treatment, and now that all the gaps have closed and there are no more wires sticking out, it seems like a breeze. It took me about 5 months to close the gaps, so hang in there. One thing to tell yourself, the more they poke out, the more your teeth have moved.

Oh, I definitely feel like I deserve to go in and get them clipped any time they are poking me. I was just wondering how often others had to get them clipped.

I don't know if having them bend the wires would do anything or not, since mine seem to eat holes in my cheeks even when only about 1 mm is sticking out. I guess I'm just a freak of nature.

I've had my first wire clip job two weeks into my last ajustment. Ortho usally puts in stops on the wires so the don't travel enough to poke me in the cheeks but this time it was killing me so I went in .

I have only had to go in once to get the wire clipped and that was about 10 days after I got my upper braces placed. Last week I got a new wire and a couple days later I was feeling the wire poking. The only reason I didn't call my orthodontist's office was because I had an appt. in about 5 days to get the wire removed because I'm getting my teeth cleaned. I could have called but the wax is helping alot. My ortho is only about 8 minutes away but I was too lazy to go. I know when I tell them in a few days, they will tell me I should have called - they are always so accomodating when I need something. Two more days and I will no longer have to use the wax.

wires

#8 Post by science teacher »

I think I'm at the ortho's a lot. I think I went in 3 times before my first adjustment.
Now they clip the wire almost too short so I"m not in all the time.

They have bent hooks and the ortho even ground off the back of a bracket that was poking me.

Hydration really works tho. If I think a wire is starting to poke me I throw down an extra bottle of water and that will usually do the trick.

It happened to me once, with powerchains. I was warned when the powerchain went on that it would pull all of the teeth together so I might end up with a little "extra" wire in the back. Sure enough, it happened. I called the ortho and they got me in to clip it within a day. In my 18 months with braces, I've called the ortho twice - once to get this wire clipped and once to fix a Damon bracket that wasn't closed (I suspect that the assistant did not close it when I got my new wire). Both times, it was easy to get an emergency appointment and they were very nice.

I figure, this is part of what we are paying for!

Soon to be clipped

#10 Post by skyclad »

I am almost 2 weeks into braces and i am calling my ortho to make an appt for thur to get my wirres clipped. My teeth have moved that much.

I have another problem, I was let go from my job on fri and I set my ortho and dentist up so they would be by work and now it is looking like I will be getting a job on the other side of town and may have to make ortho appts on sat now seeing as how my ortho is only there on thur and sat. It would cost me a ton to switch to an ortho on same side of town as work but i will wait to do anything until i find a job. if i had known I was going to be let go I would have waited.

I can totally relate to the wire poking situation!!!

I was going in regularly to get the wires in the back snipped and about two months ago they decided to try a new tactic. They put a dent in the back of the wires to prevent them from shifting out of place.
Even so, I still get poking. I've gone in about every three weeks the last couple times for clipping and I keep getting mini-adjustments when I go in so I end up going back again soon because there's been so much motion!

The poking is totally uncomfortable, but I am still happy to know things have been moving in my mouth that much!!

That's definitely been my experience too. The cheek tissue is much happier when I've been drinking the proper amount of water. It can't solve everything but it can definitely prevent a lot.

I've gone in once for a clipping and that was early on when I was still experiencing a lot of movement between appointments. I really haven't had too many problems since a basic alignment has been established, as there's not as much excess wire to move out. If I had extraction gaps to close I'm sure it'd be similar to early on in my treatment.

My archwire was moving so the wire was poking on the other side. I was too lazy to go to ortho, but after a week I had to because the wire was poking 5mm. I just used lots of wax.

I would simply get the rubber head of the tool in behind the wire, and use it to pull the wire forward slowly. Of course, as it moved forward on that side, it would move on round the curve and back in at the back on the other side. The tool wouldn't slip off the end of the wire, because the wire would dig into the rubber very slightly.

I tried with tweezer to pull the wire and I ended up popping ligs out.
After that 5 mm incidence, I learned to push my wire back by myself before it grew too long. But it seems that I am not too talented, because I have had broken wire twice...
