Introduction and a question

#1 Post by Ives »

Hello everyone. Just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Ives and I will be getting braces on march 1st. I'm a little apprehensive but looking forward to the end result. I am 44 years old. I originaly wanted invisalign but was told I would get better results with traditional becuase of the position of my teeth at this moment. Hope i'm doing the right thing.

Ok now for the question - I'm thinking about getting the ceramic brackets and wires, has anyone had any experience, good or bad , going this route as opposed to metal ? They are a little more money but thats ok with me. I have more questions but i'll save them for another time. Hope you guys don't mind but ill probably be bugging you alot with questions and comments.

I'm outta here

Do a search for topics and you'll see this is a recurring debate.

As for which is better? Ask a dozen people and you'll get three answers, ceramic, metal and neither.

Good luck and welcome to the group.

I wore braces (this time) for 1294 days or 3 years, 6 months and 17 days.

Ives - Welcome to the message board! :D

I don't know much about ceramic vs metal braces although my orthodontist told me the same thing about invisalign. I'm glad I went with metal braces in the end apparently you need to have near perfect teeth for them to work effectively (as I was told by my orthodontist). Like other posters I recommend reading other posts to find out more information. This site is endless for all braces related information.

Good luck - enjoy the journey - It goes quick.

Thanks for the replies, sorry about not searching first, kind of new to this whole thing. The Link to the lig colors was great thank you. Ive been reading through this site, again thanks to all who put it together. As of about 10 days ago I couldn't tell you what a bracket or a lig was. When I get some time i'll do some more searching through past posts. Kiwi, thanks for the B-day list. Didn't even think about that kind of stuff.

A couple of people here at work told me that the spacers was the worse part for them,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,so ive got that to look forward to.

Hey Kiwi
I go in for spacers on the 23rd of Feb then go in for braces on March 1st.
Might have to have brackets on top only for awhile, not sure yet. I have some serious problems to fix. Wish I would of done this as a kid, but my parents let me choose and of course kids know best  so now i'm paying for it in more ways than one. My bottom teeth have moved back and up enough that they rub the roof of my mouth, causing much discomfort. Can't wait to get this fixed.

Hi Ives! I too talked with my ortho about Invisalign and got basically the same message -- he could probably fix some things, but not all the problems with my bite (that I never even knew I had). Since they quoted a similar price and time frame for both, I decided to go with the braces.

I get my top braces in a week, and I'm doing ceramic tops/metal bottoms. I had a little concern because I was told ceramics may be more prone to breakage, but I got reassurance from folks here that I should be fine.

It's hard to imagine that a week from now I'll have all this stuff in my mouth. Agh!

Hey Denise, thanks for the info. Ive decided to go with ceramics. Maybe go with all black ligs. That would look awesome. Anyways, my main concern was if there was any difference besides cosmetic. Sounds like they might be more comfortable as far as the cheeks go. Again thanks for the info.

Jen, the only reason I even chose to pursue braces was invisalign. When I was told I couldn't do them I was a little upset but decided to still go through with braces after my wife talked me into it. She's usually right about these things. Would of gotten them sooner but had to go through a TMJ treatment first. That lasted about a year and 6 months. Wearing that appliance was no fun at all. That thing was huge. Plus had to pay for daughters braces first.

Kiwi, your probably right about this one. Technology has come a long ways in 30 years. It just would of been nice to have this over and done with allready. But as they say, "today is the first day of the -ahhh you know the rest. :D

I read someones post that said the braces made them feel younger, well i could use that right now. My daughter called me last week. Yep I'll be a Grandfather in July. Seems like just yesturday me and my buds were riding our bikes to the five and dime for candy and comic books.
