? about gum

#1 Post by tracy729 »

I have been braced for a little over a month now. Everything is going ok. No pain to speak of so I am happy. At my first adjustment my ortho says that my teeth are shifting already!

My question is: does anybody chew gum? I used to pre-braces and I am dying to chew a piece of gum. I only have about 8 upper brackets in the front so I do not think that chewing gum will be a huge deal.

Any input?

Thanks

My ortho says absolutely no gum, but I have to chew it every once in a while. I used to always chew it before I got braces so complete stopping would drive me bonkers. I always chew sugar free though. I will admit I am pretty bad at not eating what they tell you not to eat. I have had a few carmel candies, eaten corn on the cob, etc. :?

I always chewed gum, sugar free orbit ice but haven't done so since I had my extractions and brace... I do miss it, but my ortho said no!

I think you will be fine to chew gum. If its sugar free, it probably won't do any harm. I chewed gum throughout being braced and nothing ever happened with gum. You just don't want something like hubba bubba or bubble yum!

I chew gum all the time. Sugar-Free of course. My ortho told me I should though. Said it was good for the blood flow and to help w/any pain from adjustments. Glad he gave the ok because I would have anyway. I was a smoker and now I am a chain chewer so there is no way I can function w/out gum!

Denise, yes it was quite the task to get them clean afterwords but it was so worth it. It was really good corn... lots of flavor and the kind that you get at the fair cooked on the bbq. Threw some garlic salt on there and I was in heaven! I was careful the entire time that I didn't pop a bracket. I invented a new method for eating corn on the cob and it worked. Can't explain it, but I managed to eat it just fine.

I always chew gum, it helps me relieve my stress. I've never had any problems and only ever chewed sugar free stuff anyway.

Chew away!! It doesn't really get stuck. If you've just had an adjustment it hurts a bit, but in a funny kind of way, you can take your frustration out on it!

Enjoy!

if you are going to chew gum get a sugar free gum that uses xylitol as the artificial sweetner. Some other sweetners can still damage your teeth just like sugar. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xylitol
