Double HeadGear

#1 Post by jose »

Hi Everybody..

It has been a long time..

Finally after a long travel period for business reasons I got my brackets 3 months ago. I have now full metal Brackets up and down GAC R Innovation Type.

Today I got my 4th monthly adjustments and I got a real shock.

My ortho want to put me for 8 hrs a day a double headgear up and down.

I do not have an overbite, but he is saying that it will be the only way to hold my molars to go forward. As my TPA is not working so properly.

I never heard that this could even been possible and I think there is nobody here with a double headgear.

He wants me to put a combi hg up and a cervical down.

He sayins that is only for 8 hrs per day at night.

I told him that I have to think about at least a week.. Also because he never told me about this possibility...

What you suggest me? Ever got something similar?

If only one, how it could be to talk, to sleep? and to have some relax at night at home?

Give me advises PLEASE...

I will post pictures soon.

I will try on the week end.

Thanks for your help.

Jose

Hey man yea I had the same headgear you did. Its a pain man, but you gotta find out personally and see how well you do with it. I wore mine for 6 months for 18 hours, yea that was not fun at all. You'll be alright believe me man.

I can't tell you how it is to wear, but I can share what I've learned about it...

I'm having the same sort of issue. I just had my final consult today, and we talked about how to keep the molars back where they belong. Of most concern is just the upper jaw, as the lower jaw isn't as far forward. There are a few options that we talked about. What follows is the stuff that my ortho said about each.

1. TPA. This just goes between the two molars, and can help a little, but really isn't a reliable way to keep the molars in place.

2. Nance. This is kind of like a TPA. There is a plastic "button" that sits up against the top/front of the palate, and a wire goes back from each side to the molar bands. The good part about this is that it's totally in the mouth and nobody knows it's there, once you get used to talking around it. The drawback is that the way the forces are applied, it can cause the molars to tip.

3. Headgear. You pretty much know about this one. This is my ortho's primary choice. It applies forces in the right plane. And actually, it pushes the molars backward, whereas the Nance simply keeps them from going forward. No need, of course, to go into the drawbacks.

4. Mini-screw implants. These are tiny screws that are surgically implanted in the palate, and thus serve as a stable anchor point. I didn't really ask my ortho about it, since I totally rejected the idea when he mentioned it. I know some of the drawbacks are risk of infection (at least, I assume, since they are screwing something into your bone) and the implants can be rejected or come loose, which requires an alternate route or re-implantation.

The plan for my mouth is the Nance, and then headgear for 10-12 hours at night. Oh joy, oh rapture... I think I'm going to call the ortho back and at least talk to him about the implants. It's a newer technology (at least in the U.S.). I want to go over the pros and cons, how comfortable he is with working with them (if he's never worked with them, I don't want to be his practice case!), and cost. But I have a feeling that the cost is going to be a major drawback, since the Nance and headgear is included in my general ortho fees, but the implants wouldn't be.

Curious what does a lower facebow achieve?

Mike
I wore braces (this time) for 1294 days or 3 years, 6 months and 17 days.
But who's counting?

I will try to het them tomorrow in my appointment.
