Archwire came out....any advice?

#1 Post by itsjustme »

Hey guys. So I'll try and explain what happened the best I can, but I do not know any technical terms, so hopefully you will understand what I'm explaining! I was eating pieces of an apple, and I guess because of how hard they are, they got under my archwire between two back teeth, and pulled the archire out of the last bracket. The archwire was not pulled out completely, but I assume the "stud" on the end of the archwire got pulled off and so there was a big buldge in the wire before the last bracket. I was able to push it back through the last bracket, but since there is no longer that stud on the end, I'm assuming it might keep happening? Also, assuming I can have it stay in place until my next adjustment, do you think it coming out has caused any unbalance and might change my progress? Let me know if this has happened to you and if this warrants an ortho appointment. Thanks!! :D

It doesn't sound like a big deal, as you're managed to push the wire back into position. I doubt that it would have affected your treatment.

However, if you're concerned about it call up your ortho's office and see what the professionals have to say.

This used to happen to me quite a lot at the beginning- it was very annoying. As you progress in your treatment it will happen less as your replacement wires will become progressively stronger and less flimsy. Unfortunately, there is nothing at the end of the wire to stop it from doing this.

Since it was happening on the top linguals, my flatmate and boyfriend became quite adept at pushing the wire back into the last bracket with a pair of tweezers while i was hanging off the couch upside down with my mouth open.

Don't worry, if the wire is secured in that last bracket it won't affect your treatment!

Probably no big deal but I'd see your doctor. After five months of linguals my experience is the ortho can usually do away with most minor issues fairly easily. You don't pay by the visit anyway..
