Fixed vs removable bite plate

My son had a fixed bite plate installed on Monday. Adjusting has been awful. He can hardly eat and his speech is awful. I can live with the speech issue since it will only be on four to five months however he cannot eat anything. On Saturday I finally convinced him to eat some normal food and that evening the wire the spring was on broke off. Is a removable bite plate an option so he can take it out to eat? The ortho never mentioned this as an option.
