Re: 29 - Braces Journey (terrified)

Wow, did that turn out well, Steph!! Your ortho did a beautiful job! Now go on and get a phone with more storage to handle the crazy number of selfies you'll be taking. :D

Making progress (yay!)...and a molar tube question

I'm happy to say that it feels like we're making progress! After taking what felt like a few steps backwards initially, I'm finally getting a few more back-to-back-to-back days where the TM joint pain is somewhere between "not too bad" and great. In fact, earlier this month the Joint Fairy...

Re: Metal or Ceramic?

Hi - Thread bomb alert! I hope it's helpful. You can find studies for almost any aspect if you’re willing to look hard enough. I researched some of the differences beforehand and got information from my ortho as well. I’ll summarize what I remember and what I experienced below. I’ve had both (mostly...

Re: Gaps opening with class 2 elastics

I think that's your culprit. My understanding (from the receiving end of a similar experience) is the initial NiTi wires are great at gradually working on rotations, unraveling crowding, and initial leveling and aligning, but they don't do much with arch shape (among other things needed later). Even...

Re: Gaps opening with class 2 elastics

Yes, that would seem unusual to me as well, if the only change was the addition of class II elastics. What you're describing sounds a lot more like the work of your lower archwire. Has that been changed recently (within the last two appointments)?

Re: 5 Years on

If it were me, I'd probably use the essix during the day when interacting with people, and then switch to the Hawley when I got home. That way you're not broadcasting the labial wire after all these years when you're out and about, but you're not stuck wearing the essix all day. At least at home you...

Heartofdarkness and Karla - Congrats in advance to you both! Karla, these next three days will probably feel as long as the last three years!

Re: Ugh. Help. Is this a normal part of the process? Just about ready to quit treatment.

The good news is that neither your perio nor your ortho have mentioned it, and they've been "up close and personal" very recently, and even if you think the ortho isn't looking that far up, I'd assume the perio is since that's all part of the gum tissue, which is their balliwick. However, ...

Re: Tmj

I was wondering if it comes on at different times in treatment for others too. Yes, I've found it fluctuates, and I don't think that's unusual if you're already prone to issues with your TM joint. And it seems to trigger for seemingly no reason, right? I think your biggest clue is this comment... M...

Re: Self-Ligating Ceramic Braces

Hi - As with many things, it's a personal preference. I've had mostly ceramic (In-ovation C) and a few metal brackets and don't really notice much of a difference between them. Below is a comparison I found, so you have actual measurements if you want. The "depth" (how far they stick out f...

Re: My Carriere, retainer, ceramic braces journey at 31 y/o

I'm sorry to hear that you had the remedial assistant (aka office dunce) doing the work, but your description of the day is hilarious! I guess the good news (maybe?) regarding the metal/ceramic mix up is that at least you know what to expect on your future debracing appointment. Am I trying too hard...

Re: Power chains not closing gap.

Hey HB - Sorry to hear you're stuck in slow motion. It's really frustrating when gaps are slow to respond. Obviously, follow your ortho's instructions because he/she has a plan. I have no idea if your elastic setup is prone to causing or closing gaps. Assertives' configuration obviously helped close...

Re: "What A Long, Strange Trip It's Been" - Robert Hunter, Grateful Dead

...but I am good at making things up and providing SWAGs on demand. It sounds like you and my ortho have a lot in common! So, I'd say you'll be fine when your TMJ surrenders to the righteousness of proper anatomical alignment any day now. That would be nice, but unfortunately, I don't think my orth...

Re: "What A Long, Strange Trip It's Been" - Robert Hunter, Grateful Dead

I really should have realized that when you move from a splint to braces, all of the relief that came from the splint settling your TM joint goes out the window too. Obvious, right? Not to me. Holy moly (and some other four-letter words) my jaw has not been happy these last few weeks. It has definit...

Re: Braces story - 28 years old

...lots of little gaps that have opened up in the last month... Is it crazy to be hoping for a powerchain to close it up LOL. I heard silver powerchains stain... any recommendations for a good colour choice if I am given that option? Or have you had a good experience with silver not staining? Not c...
