Confession time: I chose my orthodontist because he was nearest! With 3 children needing treatment and myself hating driving, I didn't want long journeys every time some minor adjustment was needed. I do know travelling time should not be the top priority, but there will be an awful lot of to-ing an...

Sorry, Brahma, I didn't mean to alarm you, talking about the pain! It's only for a couple of days after each adjustment, not constant. And the friends who have had problems with their brackets are all with different orthodontists from the one treating my family, so it might well have more to do with...

Hi Brahma Yes, it's an awful lot of money, isn't it? I hope it's worth it but can't say for sure. Probably my daughter's friends who've had the basic braces will get the same results in the end, so in that sense we haven't gained much. But they all complain about pain and many have experienced brack...

Hi Brahma I know just how you feel and don't think the fears are silly at all! I feel a bit like I stood at the side of a river for a long time before daring to take the plunge. Now I've finally jumped in I'm being swept along by the current and all the nasty procedures I have to go through are the ...

Yes: small leg lifts! When my daughter had impressions done the first time she started gagging badly and the dental assistant, all nice and calmly and gently, told her to lift her left leg slowly up... then down... then the right leg...all as if it were part of the impressions procedure! I wondered ...

Hope you get on well at your next appointment and manage to get answers to all your questions. It could be a good sign that your ortho wanted time to work things out with the models and so on: at least it shows he's putting some thought into it! I don't know what the general position is on the type ...

Thank you for the input folks. It's certainly given me something to ponder. I'm seeing my orthodontist again next week so I'll have a chat with him about it then.

Yes, my orthodontist was expecting to cement the expander in before my operation, but then the surgeon said he prefers to put it in during surgery himself. Oh well, not sure I care too much either way as I'm expecting the first few days to be pretty grim anyway! I'll get a bit of a feel for what it'...

Hi Brahma I agree that you should get a second opinion. You'll be seeing the ortho for many years to come, so you need to find someone you get on with and have confidence in. Before I left the UK (10 years ago!) I saw an orthodontist privately and he wanted to pull a load of teeth to make room as we...

Thanks for the welcome, Michelle, and for the food & drink advice. I see you've had your expander in a while now - are you able to eat & talk quite normally now? Hope you're rid of it soon, anyway. My younger daughter also had an expander and coped remarkably well, so I'm sure she'll be more...

I came across this site the other day and have spent all evening reading the 44 pages on this topic! I've never met a single adult undergoing corrective dentistry (I'm being treated by my children's orthodontist) so I'm really grateful to all those who've related their personal experiences on here. ...

Joining from Germany

Hi all! I came across this site when I thought I really ought to look up some more information on the work that's just started on my teeth. So far I've proceeded on the "ignorance is bliss" principle. But as the date of my operation approaches I felt the need for a bit more information, es...
