I never pop pain meds or use heating pads anymore. If I chomp on gum right away and keep chewing, I never really have that terrible pain (especially second day pain which was the WORST) anymore.
now if only that worked with elastics rubbing and the pain of teeth hitting together in new places...

Re: New Torture Device---What have I done?!?
I have had a TPA and a full palatal expander (plastic covering almost the entier roof of my mouth exactly as shown in the picture but my plastic went further back towards my throat). The TPA was annoying but feels like nothin' after the expander. I've never heard that version called a pendax. The li...

Re: had a "Kim" wire with your elastics?
Hi Fellini! Congrats on beginning the journey! It's one of those things I wanted but always put off as well. Better late than never. It's not always a picnic, but you'll see signs of progress along the way that'll give you a boost between the rough spots. As for all that metal and rubber, it hasn't ...

Re: how many stages?! And elastics :-(
I don't love the way they look. Well, the ones toward the front of my mouth. I do see people glancing at my mouth more now that I have them. They're sort of translucent, but start a kind of yellowy color that I'm not a fan of and somehow end kind of oddly white. They kind of look like spit in the co...

Re: using a child sized toothbrush
absolutely! You're ahead of the game Tiny. I wasn't getting "in there" even with my regular sonicare brush so my dentist recommended additionally using the kids brush for the nooks and crannies (though I hope my teeth don't look like an english muffin)

Re: had a "Kim" wire with your elastics?
I don't think any of us in this forum so far have completed our treatment with MEAW/Kim. In fact, today was the big day for the top wire installation. I probably should wait to post since the experience wasn't exactly rainbows and sunshine (one of my bone plate extensions snapped off, yowcher!) but ...

Re: How do they remove a palate expander?
kaylaa is right, that's pretty much it. If you handled getting it on, this is a much faster process than tightening the bands and bonding. It IS kind of gag-inducing grossness if you had a lot of plastic (as I did) covering the roof of your mouth with your expander. No matter what there's food stuck...

Re: had a "Kim" wire with your elastics?
I'm getting one of these in the future. I'm scared. It is weird that it's so hard to find info online. From what I understand, it's a relatively new technique. I have an adjustment today. Hopefully, I can get a better time table. I think it's technically been around since the 70's, but it's "n...

Re: had a "Kim" wire with your elastics?
I was thinking about if that would work the moment lynn posted it. These wires are pretty rough on the mouth. I might need to see a real picture of these and not just the rendering in the add. The worry with these is that they wouldn't extend enough to cover the harshest part of the kim wires which ...

Re: had a "Kim" wire with your elastics?
NICE! you're well on your way krey!! thanks for the compliment, it's so funny how hard we can be on our smiles if we don't see them as perfect. I can see progress now, but I still feel like a mess. and yeah baby, those kim wires should come with elastics on day 1! I know it sounds cruel but the soon...

Re: Power Chain Pain
those beasts are rough, especially the first time around and especially if it's an extra long one that includes lots of teeth in it's grasp! however, though it probably seems way tighter than a normal adjustment, it goes away pretty quickly. I do recommend the gum chewing method, or the plastic bite...

Re: had a "Kim" wire with your elastics?
thanks krey!! that's the first i've seen of a timeline, I'll be very thankful if I'm on the 3-5 month timeline with these. If I keep thinking that, maybe I can suck it up and say it's worth it. The bottom loop wire is driving me crazy so I know the top will be worse. Everything gets stick. but, WE C...

Re: had a "Kim" wire with your elastics?
yeah, the word "comfort" in there seemes like a cruel joke, unless you compare it to surgery and jaws wired shut (in that case I guess I'll take it!!) they've been around a long time apparently, weird that it still seems uncommon considering all the open bites. Not sure why it's soooo much...

Re: "Loop Wires" ???
I just started a thread on the same topic because I couldn't find anything out about them.
See the thread about "Kim" wires.
Also google MEAW or multi-loop edgewise. There's not much out there on them in general.

Re: had a "Kim" wire with your elastics?
Haha, thanks Kim! i finally was able to hunt down the more common name. Multi-loop Edgewise Archwire, commonly referred to as MEAW, invented by a "Dr. Kim." I could only find one other person on here from a few years ago who was also treated with this. Seems common in asia, odd, I thought ...
