Re: Six Month Smiles - really six months??

Some people with full treatment get their braces off for their wedding and honeymoon, wear their retainer during, and then get the braces put back on afterwards. Your ortho would have to be willing to do that, though, it's a lot of extra work. Some people also have their braces edited out of their w...

Re: Excuse me, I couldn't help but notice....

I can't think of one conversation I've had with a stranger about my braces. I'm surprised! Hmmm. Nope, still can't. Even with people I know it doesn't happen very often and I usually am the one to bring it up. I haven't met any adults with braces except for two young undergrads at school (who are te...

Re: How long should I wait before I get teeth shaved?

That's interesting that the inverted V can be caused by root position. I didn't think of that. Unfortunately my conspicuous inverted V is definitely from wear due to clenching/grinding on pushed in front teeth. I just had another panoramic xray today and my roots are all lovely and parallel. They've...

Re: Is it normal for adjustments to hurt?

I was really worried about ipr as I have a lot of gum recession and sensitive teeth. I was pleasantly surprised to not have one instant of pain during my 3 (4?) ipr sessions. They've done all of my front top and bottom teeth, some multiple times-- in between and along the top edges. I do use Rx toot...

Re: Is it normal for adjustments to hurt?

After the first few months, your bracket slots will be nicely lined up and putting in a new wire will be a piece of cake! Wait until you get to finishing wires where the tiniest of bends can make them nearly impossible to put in. Bwahaha-- no, really it's not that bad but it does still hurt! I have...

Re: Is it normal for adjustments to hurt?

Short answer, yes. :). But it will get better. You may have pain after every adjustment or only after a few. I wonder if your ortho is maybe moving your teeth too quickly-- i.e. Bumping the wire to a size that's too big? You could ask about your treatment plan to see if he's skipping a size or two, ...

Re: The Professor's Story of Braces at 40 (with pics)

Very true, it took all day for the effect to wear off and I felt hungover the next morning. Still worth it though :) That's cool that it's so reversible. That sounds like a really quick procedure! It's definitely better to be comfortable during stressful procedures than try to barrel through it and ...

Re: The Professor's Story of Braces at 40 (with pics)

IV sedation sounds intense. Do they offer Halcion or another tranquilizing pill? I was really worried about my gum graft but, boy, those 2 Halcion pills (& nitrous) were incredible and I remember almost nothing from the procedure and none of it bothered me. When I had my wisdom teeth out they ga...

Re: Weight loss

I haven't lost any weight even with a gum graft! Hah! I was hoping to, and I did lose a little at first, but once I got used to everything I started to eat whatever I want. I think the braces have helped me not GAIN weight. I think if I didn't have braces I would absolutely have gained weight the pa...

Re: My start to perfect straight teeth (:

That was my thought, too, that it was just a temporary "tooth". I've done a lot of research (very worried about my teeth!) and apparently it's REALLY hard for your teeth to fall out. You have to have severe periodontal disease, extreme bone loss, and/or decay/tooth destruction. In other wo...

Re: Underbite & crossbite correct w/Damon, IPR, Acceledent etc

They want to give me Essix upper and lower as well as a permanent retainer on bottom (possibly one on top, too, depending on where my teeth end up). That was before the gum graft, though. I think they can cut it so it doesn't touch my gums (at least I hope so!!!). I hadn't thought of that. I know In...

Re: Underbite & crossbite correct w/Damon, IPR, Acceledent etc

Gum graft! This may be TMI, if so I apologize but I'm posting this for everyone who is like me and obsessively researching. This was a free gingival graft using my palate tissue. I had a mucogingival defect-- ie, gum tissue too thin-- and they corrected this with the graft. They did 8 teeth at once ...

Re: Underbite & crossbite correct w/Damon, IPR, Acceledent etc

Pictures! I'll start with tooth pictures and then show gum graft pictures. Apologies for my teeth-- now that I have the go ahead from the perio I can get another cleaning. I just had a cleaning in July but since I couldn't brush or floss my bottom teeth for over a month I already need a cleaning! Th...

Re: The Professor's Story of Braces at 40 (with pics)

I hope your wisdom teeth removal is uneventful! Perhaps since they're fully erupted and in good positions they should be pretty easy (hopefully?? vs crazy impacted wisdoms, anyway). How would that effect your treatment, though? Would your teeth all spread out because of the new room and then you hav...

Re: when did you realize you wanted to get your smile fixed?

It was never an option when I was a kid (although needed) and, silly child I was, I was actually HAPPY I didn't have braces like other people I went to school with. For awhile I thought if I just whitened my teeth they'd look ok (crooked but white is fine, right?) then the dentist started telling me...
