Re: April 18 Surgery Buddies...

Small world, I'm also from AZ! I had trouble breathing while running and working out which was due to my narrow airway and deviated septum. I'm very excited to get back into things with post-surgery and see how much things have improved. I also saw that video, which was by Sharon Farrell, and can be...

Re: PRE & POST-OP SUPPLY LIST---add your list or ideas

One of the best items I got after leaving the hospital was an Amazon Fire Stick ($30 USD) which allowed me to watch Netflix, Prime, HBO, Hulu, etc. (subscriptions sold separately). Usually I would prefer to go on my computer or read but I just didn't have the energy/focus. I got hooked on The Wire (...

Re: April 18 Surgery Buddies...

For anybody having trouble with wires poking their mouth you might want to pick up some dental wax from your local pharmacy. Mojo, I hope you get the chicken nuggets/fries or the Cali burrito! I haven't had any cravings until the last few days and it's been for McDonalds' fries, Fogo de Chão, burger...

Re: April 18 Surgery Buddies...

Unfortunately I still have a lot of sinus drainage during sleep and my surgeon recommends sleeping inclined as to minimalize my swelling, so sleeping hasn't really been the best so far but it is getting better. Today I used a nasal spray and my sinus discharge has been foul smelling, so I hope it's ...

Re: April 18 Surgery Buddies...

Intermaxillary Fixation Screws (IMF) are usually a lot easier on patients vs. arch bars (as long as your surgeon is competent at placing them). I'm jealous you're already eating soft foods! How is your guys swelling? Today is the start of my 3rd week and I'm doing really well except at the Lefort os...

Re: Are multiple surgeries always necessary?

No, additional surgeries are not always required after SARPE, however it is very common that a patient's narrow palate is a secondary symptom of hyper/hypoplasia of that jaw and thus would require additional treatment. I.e. it would be somewhat common that a patient with an underdeveloped mandible w...

Re: Can’t deal with this splint

You probably can't drink with a straw until the 4th week even if you didn't have extractions, but you should call the doctor's office to confirm. I'm almost to 3 weeks post-op and I still couldn't use a straw if I tried. I was able to drink from a cup around week 2 though which was amazing. See if y...

Re: April 18 Surgery Buddies...

Great Mojo, you're almost there! I too am at the "phantom inch" stage where my nose feels itchy but scratching doesn't help at all. I think this partially due to the fact that I'm regaining more and more sensation in that area every day (sometimes it tingles, sometimes it feels like electricity) and...

Re: April 18 Surgery Buddies...

Ahh the suction wand, I miss that old friend!

Arch bars are typically kept on for 4-6 weeks, not sure about hooks added to braces but I assume it's about the same.

No, it is not a problem that you accidentally left a couple off for 24 hours, especially if you've been wearing them faithfully for three weeks.

Re: April 18 Surgery Buddies...

Hey Rabbit, glad you made it to the other side! I was also in the hospital for 5.5 days so I know the struggle. My surgery included a lot of soft tissue work in my throat which means lots of selling and a temporary worsening of OSA (which you don't seem to have). Pain in the ears is due to swelling/...

Re: April 18 Surgery Buddies...

Maybe a small pocket mirror to help eat at lunch time? Worst case scenario you can put your phone's camera in selfie mode and see if any food is left on your face.

Wet wipes might also help.

Maybe blend some soups and pack an Ensure/Boost the night before?

I've been trying some of the cheap canned soup from the grocery store and some of them are pretty good, might be worth a shot...

Re: April 18 Surgery Buddies...

If you're having throat pain I recommend avoiding anything acidic such as Gatorade which can cause pain when swallowing.

I remember having two tubes and nasal packing removed, NOT fun!

Wow that's incredible, I'm glad everything went well and you're starting to recover!

I know it's a huge pain in the butt but after a month or two when it's all over I'm sure you'll notice a large improvement in your quality of life.

Better late than never!
