Listen to your orthodontist! Invisalign can only move the teeth so much. It is not for everyone.
If you go with your plan you will probably be spending twice as much in money AND time!
Having braces on is no big deal. I have the clear braces and they are great. More discreet!

I scheduled a dental cleaning a few days before my braces went on. I did not have extractions.

I wanted clean teeth to start with and also to address any issues before brace day just in case.

I think this has been the only time I have gone 6 months to the day for cleanings.
