Re: Confess your orthodontic sins.

I just found a bullseye carmel candy in the bottom of my purse and ate it. Not only is that a braces no no but I think it's been in the bottom of my purse since my braces went on 17 months ago! Is that a double sin?

Re: 8 days to brace day

I was a nervous wreck and that's all I thought about the week before. I even went out and got drunk & cried myself to sleep the night before they went on - all for nothing. It wasn't nearly as bad as I imagined physically. I thought everyone in my office and life in general would make fun of a 47 ye...

Re: Tips for brushing?

I had a very similar issue with the crowding. I would get bad tartar build up under two of the brackets. The tech at the ortho's office would take care of it for me about every other visit until there was a big enough movement that it didn't happen any more. I thought it was extra glue that was just...

Re: Holy Zebra!!!! Elastics are so irritating this round.

I feel very left out - my elastics were all colors. I would have preferred the animals LOL. In terms of the irritation from the rubber bands, I had really good luck with Kanka Softbrush Gel. It looks like a pen with a soft brush on the end so you can put the medicine wherever you want it. It numbs a...

Re: Did you get a wire change on your first adjustment?

I didn't get a wire change until my 3rd adjustment. My bottoms were really really crowded and crooked so they had to move quite a bit on that first wire before she could move up to the next one.

Time Between Debanding & Retainer?

How much time between when you get your braces off and when you get your retainer?

Re: Visible Elastics...

I felt the same way and I got that configuration early on so I had just gotten over the embarassment of braces when the triangles went on about 3 months later. And I appeared with them for the first time in a meeting. Yikes. That was tough but like everything else on this journey you get over it. I ...

Re: Hi! and A general brace reaction Q?

I do a lot of public speaking for work and have to endur a lot of lunch meetings. In general nobody notices. If they do, I usually get big kudos for being brave enough to do it a lot of questions from curious adults who have wanted to do it but haven't wanted to ask questions. So, when people do tal...

Re: 30 Years to think about it + ???

Go for it! The time will go by anyway and you will disappointed you waited. I travel quite a bit for work as well and was 47 when these bad boys went on. I'm soooo happy I did it. Other than my college degrees, this was the single biggest investment I made in myself as an adult and I'm glad I did. Y...

Re: Does your ortho office have assigned assistants?

My ortho's office used 3 assistants as well and I've gotten all 3 of them at various times. Luckily they are all very good, although I will say one is definitely better and I always cross my fingers for her.

Re: Feeling discouraged...

Try not to get discouraged. This is totally normal. My bite has changed so many times. Just when I think I've learned how to eat again, it changes and I'm on a new adventure. My braces are scheduled to come off at the end of August and my bite is still changing on a daily basis. It's frustrating and...

Re: What would you do?

I think it's more a case of whether you want the braces on for the wedding vs. the extractions. If they had to hold off a week or two on the extractions until after the wedding, I doubt that would matter very much in the grand scheme of things. There will always be something going on in your life th...

Re: First Day with braces....

Welcome to the cool kids club! I'm sorry you're having a rough adjustment. I remember exactly what you described. I thought between the soreness and the fact that my teeth didn't come together anywhere, I'd never be able to eat again. It gets better and better and better over time. And the good news...

Re: Poll: Do you get your wires off before a cleaning?

No way. While I bet it would be awesome there's just no way to try to coordinate that. Even though my dentist and orthodontist are <5 miles from each other, that would be a whole day out of work to have wires off at orthodontist, go to dentist for cleaning and then try to get a 2nd appointment the s...

Re: Rubber bands

I know they are so tough to get used to. That was the hardest configuration of the three I had to wear. But please try to tough it out and be as compliant as you possibly can. My experience has been that powerchains and rubber bands have been super effective and have really moved my treatment along....
