Re: New Orthodontic Phobias

Something stuck in my teeth paranoia.

And I'm terrified of the stuff they use to take a mould of your teeth. I'm scared I'll choke on it.

Re: Hygiene Check!!

Yes. Pre-braces I flossed everyday and for the most part I floss every day now. If I don't floss I use the smallest interdental brushes I have to clean along the gumline. If I don't floss regularly my gums will quickly become inflamed.

Re: No brackets on the back?

They often don't put brackets on those teeth because they usually just follow the others and move where the are supposed to. It's not that way for everyone, but that is the reason why I didn't get them on mine originally. As the gaps closed those ones would move where they should be. However they en...

Re: I couldn't have gotten thru the 1st month without...

Wax, piksters (size 0), superfloss, ibuprofen, salt water rinses, soup, smoothies, mac and cheese, lip balm (get a good quality one) and wax. Yes I said wax twice. I'm almost 12 months in and still use it regularly. My gums toughened up pretty quickly but as my bite changes I keep biting holes in th...

Re: How often are your visits?

Adjustments for me are 8-10 weeks. I rarely make it that long though. Lots of gaps being closed means lots of visits for pokey wires to be cut.

Re: Gap between front teeth

Very normal. Happened to me early in the process. It's common for gaps to appear and disappear, especially in the beginning.

Re: Confused - Advice Needed

I personally think the teeth would look better if the two incisors were brought down. If the front teeth were pushed up then your canines might look a little fang like. Of course if that is the look you're going for..... ;-)

Re: Would you pay the full amount of braces up front?

I paid up front. Didn't see the point of monthly payments when I had the money and could pay it then. The practice is very well established so the odds of them going bankrupt are slim. If they did decide to close down the practice I believe they would offer partial refunds to clients.

Re: Has anyone ever used Biotene with their braces?

I used the Biotene dry mouth gel at night time for a few months. My mouth did eventually stop drying out and I no longer need to use it. I found the taste to be pleasant and it worked quite well.

Re: How many ortho's did you consult?

Only one. I live in a small town and there is only one orthodontist practice here and they are only here twice a week. The next closest one is an hour away and I don't have the money or the good health required for driving that distance on a regular basis. My consultation was free. I have a pension ...

Don't worry, it's normal for the appearance of your teeth to get worse before they get better. Frustrating, but normal.

Re: Bit Stubborn Gap - What to do?

How long have they been trying to close it? I have two gaps in my lower arch (one either side between canine and premolar) each were 6mm or so. They put springs on 3 months ago to try and close them. I was told it would take 4-6 months. Three months in and one side has closed by 2mm, the other 1mm. ...

Re: Getting sick with braces and elastics

I couldn't find any baking soda so I just used salt. Made my mouth feel better. In all honesty I doubt it was needed. I had cleaned my mouth so well I doubt there was anything left to worry about, but it certainly did put my mind at ease. I just had a stomach bug and am better now. I hope that every...

Re: Going into my first adjustment today with tons of questi

It's normal. In the beginning I had gaps appear where there weren't any before. Now some of my teeth overlap where they didn't before. It's quite normal for teeth to get worse before they get better. As for the pain I found that the first adjustment was the worst and the second one not quite as bad,...

Re: Did everyone say your teeth looked fine...

A few. Most people seem to think that the only thing braces do is straighten crooked teeth and my problem wasn't crooked teeth. I just point out that they do more than that and I needed braces if I wanted to keep my front teeth. Most people haven't noticed though. I don't mind as I'm not doing it fo...
